The first thing that probably comes to your mind when you think of a brooch is something outdated that only your mom or grandma would wear, right? Though I’d argue that you can still be “grandma chic”, I’d argue even more that there is nothing outdated about a brooch and instead, it’s timeless! If you’re looking for a way to add a classic element to your outfit, consider accessorizing with these 7 chic and timeless ways to wear a brooch. There’s nothing old-fashioned about these looks!
Before we get into the brooch outfits, it’s important to do a quick overview of the type of best brooches to use.
I was lucky enough to find my vintage Chanel brooch used at an agreeable price (birthday present to myself), but it certainly does not have to be designer to be chic.
The best type of brooches to use would be ones that look a little bit more current. Perhaps they are subtle or maybe even sparkly, but they aren’t cheesy. Below are the styles I personally would avoid. But I’d say wear whatever makes you happy!
Proceed With Caution:
- Cameo Brooch- Some would argue that it’s timeless, but this style has a tendency to lean more towards old-fashioned. Though there are updated versions of this style that can look chic.
- Animals- Though I think bees and beetle brooches are cool, other animals and insects like a hummingbird, owl, or butterfly can tend to be a little bit cheesy.
- Anything Gaudy/Overdone- Anything too literal (wearing a snowflake brooch in winter) or over the top (a rainbow sequined daisy) can lean towards old-fashioned and miss the chic element.

1. On a Coat Lapel
If in the fall and winter you find your cold-weather outfits missing that certain something, consider adding a sparkly brooch to your coat lapel.
It’s a subtle way of completing your outfit and since coats with a lapel/collar are generally classier, well, a brooch was just made for coat styles like these!

2. On a Beret
This easy-to-copy outfit consisting of a striped sweater, black pants, ballet flats, beret, and brooch, is the perfect way to add a bit of French flair to your outfit.
Coco Chanel was frequently photographed wearing a brooch on her beret so copying this style tip is perfect for those that love the chic inspiration of iconic Chanel.

3. With Leather Shorts
No one will confuse you with looking outdated while wearing a pair of leather shorts! Mixing classy with trendy is a great way to add a current look to these otherwise timeless accessories.
A black and white color combination certainly doesn’t hurt to add that chic element to your outfit as well.
4. Pinned to a Silk Scarf On Your Bag
For a unique way to wear your brooch, why not style your accessory with an accessory (or two)?
Pinning your brooch to an effortlessly tied silk scarf on your purse is a subtle way to showcase your new favorite accessory.
5. On a Cardigan
Cardigans are a wardrobe staple, ensuring a spot in almost every woman’s wardrobe. And since this staple item gets worn a lot, it’s easy to think of it as boring.
Banish any doubt of a cardigan being a boring wardrobe piece by adding a brooch to it! There’s nothing quite like a sparkly accessory to make this versatile piece feel new again.
6. Pinned to Your Shirt Collar
A brooch pinned to the opening of your shirt collar has the same effect as a necklace while being a touch more unique.
7. Holding Your Scarf Together
Silk scarf, linen scarf, cotton scarf- oh my! Because of the vast scarf styles and ways they can be tied, there is no limit to how you can style this look.
A brooch pinned to a scarf is a stylish way to wear both of these classic pieces.
Additional ideas include pinning it to a denim jacket or a graphic tee. Mixing styles (casual and classic) is a great way to update your look and this timeless piece.
With these brooch outfit ideas, now you can style this accessory in new ways- no more just pinning it to your shirt and leaving it at that!

You have picked some cute brooches, and these are gorgeous ways to wear them.

I also liked the gorgeous Chanel brooch. Great birthday gift. I have inherited some rhinestone brooches from the 1950s. I would love to wear one with jeans and a sweater. Is this tacky? One is beautiful rectangle like a picture frame.
Linda
Not tacky, it sounds lovely and special!
My only thought is that I’d never pin anything to my scarf, it leaves a pinhole and damages the scarf. Vintage or new, quality scarves can stand on their own, without bling. They don’t even need to be Hermès, but it helps.
this article was a real disappointment. 7 chic ways and you show only one (common place) brooch? …yawn.
Thanks for your feedback. I am a little unsure of what you mean in your comment. This post was about 7 ways to wear a brooch, not 7 different styles of brooches to wear.
Agree – one $400 brooch styled a bunch of ways. That brooch is gorgeous & would look great everywhere. Why it showcase a more affordable brooch in some of the looks
Thanks for your feedback! The point of this post was to show one brooch styled in different ways. Sorry if you were expecting something else. Also, in the beginning of the post I state that nobody “needs” a designer brooch and I linked to affordable options!
Great if your “old brooches” are fricken Channel!!!! Any suggestions for us who have inherited not so iconic brooches??!!??
Amen, Patty. I have my mother’s 19th century starburst and am determined to wear it in honor and in memory of her whenever I can!! I love it and wear it as she did. Can’t help it. Sorry, fashionistas! Dorothy
I too would have liked a few different types of brooches. I felt like: Well, yeah, a Chanel brooch would look good any way you wore it. What about a less iconic number in some of these great ideas for using?
I agree!
I do feel showing a variety of brooches would expand and help us to visualize your perspective on their placement. I absolutely love brooches! And I was excited to see your ideas. Showing a Chanel brooch a variety of ways was not very enlightening but thank you for trying.
I’ll keep that in mind for the future!
Yes, I also felt that all the outfits were quite similar in style. It was a Chanel brooch on 7 very Chanel style outfits. (Which personally, I find quite old fashioned anyway – my Mum might like these.) Some ideas for more modern, or at least different style brooches, on more up to date outfits would be fantastic!
Good answer.
Antique broaches of various designs are unique and interesting and add so much whimsy to an outfit. Yet you classify them as the opposite – dated and old. A Chanel broach? Boring, overdone, poser. This article was a miss.
I couldn’t agree more! I have collected many cool pins and brooches , mainly from flea markets , yard sales and estate sales. I search for the unusual and offbeat items. I even have what she calls “cheesy “ stuff. I get compliments on tacky, cheesy, elegant…I think a fake Chanel pin is the height of fromage.
Agreed
Seriously? You think the ways in which you’re wearing the brooch aren’t old fashioned? Many of us have been wearing brooches in those ways for three times the number of years you’ve been alive.
Thank you for the excellent ideas. And, it is so great that we can all choose whatever brooch fits our style!
You have a great perspective on antique brooches. I too find them interesting. There are certain brooch styles I would personally avoid, and I made sure to emphasize *personally* in my post. I think you should wear whatever makes you happy (also stated in my post). I’m coming from my perspective of what I think are chic ways to wear a brooch. I understand that not everyone will resonate with my style, but if I didn’t write with a personal style in mind then the post would be all over the place and make no sense! By the way, I never called brooches dated and old. I mentioned a few styles to proceed with caution because they can quickly be done wrong, though plenty can be done right as well!
The problem with the writer is that every time someone leaves a comment explaining why they felt the article was lacking, there was an immediate rejection of their opinion. The brooch used was amazingly beautiful but easy to use because the simplicity worked in all situations. Using the right brooch is much trickier and would require a lot more forethought. I did like the article.
I’m glad you liked the article! I completely reject the first part of your comment though 😉
I have SO many different brooches and love them all. Wear them with scarves Jean jackets sweaters. Just about everything I liked your article. Everyone has their own style that’s what makes the world go round
Thank you, I saw new places in which I might wear a brooch.
Why are people so mean? The pictures and ideas are great.
Carolyn you don’t need to justify yourself. If people don’t like the article, they can move on.
Thank you – great tips!
I like brooches however, have been a bit unsure of how to wear without looking uncool.
Now I’ll be hunting for a nice one.
Love Janine.
PS – Chanel one is perfect!!!
I didn’t find the answer as rejection of their comments, but more as clarification of what was said as the point was missed.
Good article , great pics. great ideas , great style and really good attitude responding to grumpy people .
Agreed! Boring…
My daughter gifted me five different brooches that she has collected. I didn’t know how to use them but now I do! Especially love the idea of putting it on my denim jacket. I will be using your suggestions. It’s the first conversation I’ve seen about brooches and I am so excited to try your ideas. I’m 75 going on 40 and roof and very fashion conscious. I love not looking my age! But I keep it classy! Thank you so much
Sooo boring! Same “Brooch”. Maybe you need to do some research. Dated.
Great suggestions, I am76 yrs old and these idea’s were great thank you
Yes, a little disappointing. I thought I’d see new ways to wear a brooch (“that are not old-fashioned “). I should have known better. While the brooch placements are aesthetically pleasing, they are also classic… the way my grandmother used to wear them in the 30-40-50s. Nothing new here… 20 years ago women wore brooches in clusters. It was a silly trend that didn’t last. I’ve seen brooches on shoes. Still, the photos are nice… I just would’ve titled the article differently.. “7 classic ways to wear a brooch that never goes out of style”..??
Ah well they do say if you keep something long enough it comes back into fashion, so granny wearing them the same way in the 30’s 40’s etc makes sense, if you like something wear/use it….most of all enjoy it…don’t be a slave to the fashion industry ladies….do your fashion style as”YOU “
Have always loved my brooches thank you for these great ideas
Seriously? Not old-fashioned? Give me a break. Women have been wearing brooches in these ways for centuries. There’s nothing wrong with fashion that’s been handed down for many, many years.
I wear a rhinestone brooch of my grandmother at Christmas. My favorite way to wear it is at the back of a black velvet jacket at the waste right above the little jacket “tail.”
That’s a cool idea!
Sorry, but you are either very very young or simply not very fashion savvy. Fashionable women have always worn brooches. Brooches are an important accessory just like a belt or scarf, etc.
Yes, I agree with you that brooches are a very important accessory! (Hence the post.) The younger crowd tends to think that brooches are old-fashioned, so I wanted to highlight several outfits that looked chic, timeless, and a little bit current.
I thought the article was nicely done. And I agree with most of the points ex. (A cameo is hard to bring it fashion forward) ..
Really, none of these are new ways to wear a brooch. Used them all at some point over the years, so did my granny.
Thanks for your feedback! The goal of this post was to highlight chic (not necessarily new) ways to wear a brooch.
Oh, but a grouping of cameos would look great!
I would never wear an advertisement! I prefer more personalize adornment. Because it purports to be a Chanel brooch, it screams , “look at how rich I am!”, I can afford Chanel!”.
Sad…
What makes any of these rude people leaving comments think that it is ok? Disgusted.
I agree, this lady has put together ways of wearing brooches which she rightly says can be considered an old fashioned item by younger ladies. Why be so rude and scathing? It’s just fashion and personal style which there are no rights and wrongs over.
I agree that fashion is personal and that there are no rules, just guidelines! It’s certainly not my intention to be rude-ever. This site has a unique readership of both younger and older women and many of the older readers appreciate my younger perspective. I’m a younger woman wearing brooches and I’m proud of it. I certainly don’t find them to be old-fashioned, but some of my friends do, and I like to present both sides.
I first off I do not understand why people are being so rude over brooch wearing ideas?!
I found the article helpful . I do have brooches and my eyes were open to some new ideas.
For some of these ladies I suggest less focus on brooch wearing and more focus on respect and kindness .
Can the “old person” still wear the brooch she bought forty years ago or must it be handed down to the new trendy young ?
If you love it, wear it!
I love all types of brooches. It would have helped if you showed different types of brooches. It’s all about channel. You could have gone a little further by showing different styles of brooches. Just saying
I didn’t see anything here that my grandmother didn’t do, except advertise for a boringly outdated designer.
This. Exactly. It’s a reminder that brooches can be worn these ways not anything new or innovative.
ThankYou
i appreciate your article.
it was very positive
Jewelry should be used as an enhancement for an overall effectt. I use them when a necklace just doesn’t work well. Of. Ourse they should always be interesting or have personal significance,.
I love the idea of using a brooch at the neckline of a blouse. I have a healthy collection of brooches (including a number of cicadas!) and am grateful for a new (to me, at least) way to wear them. Also love one reader’s idea of pinning one just above the flippy tail of a jacket.
As a new subscriber, I find your style to be creative and sometimes edgy. Your wonderful ideas are different from most of the bloggers that promote mainstream clothing ads. They lack a sense of individual style and tend to look the same to me.
Brooches are great because I don’t wear large jewelry pieces and prefer subtle bling here and there.
You have an eye for style. Thanks
Thank you for sharing this!
I decorate a small Christmas tree with my rhinestone brooches. I have one on the girl stockings and I also wear one on my beanie. Love them!
Clever ideas!
Love the idea for the Christmas tree!
I inherited many brooches and stick pins. I appreciate your ideas on how to wear them. Haven’t thought about wearing them in a while, but I don’t have the heart to sell them.
Thanks for the reminder.
I love vintage pins and brooches and maybe even some of the ones that you find today I love to Wear several together in a group or maybe one on a jacket or sweeter or coat or shirt just depends on the size that they are if i will wear them in a group if they are several small ones together or a bigger one by it’s self and I even like to Wear them to dress up a really plan blue jean or denim shirt or jacket for fun
Wow ladies, this is a great article. My momma taught me if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say nothing. Perhaps all you negative gals could post some pictures with some suggestions of how you wear your brooches. Be kind!
My niece (30 something) made a stunning wedding bouquet out of a selection of gorgeous brooches. I’d never seen anything like it and it was simply beautiful. She used ‘bejewelled’ antique pieces that she collected from family and other sources. It gave the bouquet that much more meaning. I could see doing something similar only using all pearl brooches or perhaps rhinestones (although I’d favour the pearls I think). Just another idea. I enjoyed your post and already use many f these ideas.
I am not really following your take on wearing a brooch. If it’s okay to wear bee, then why not a dragonfly? Why is wearing a snowflake in the winter, cheesy?
My take was based on what people closer to my age wear and what they associate to be “cooler”. At the end of the day, that’s just my opinion, and I’d love for you to wear what you want!
I thought this was a great and timely post because this winter I saw an older woman (75ish) wearing a rhinestone brooch at a slight angle off center on the lower neck of her mock turtleneck light pink sweater and I was mesmerized by how elegant the positioning was and how it spruced up a nice but very plain sweater. My mother gave me a variety of brooches when I was a teenager, but I rarely wear them because I didn’t really know how. I also helped my daughter use one at her high school winter semiformal this year when at the last minute she had to borrow a too-large cowl neck slip dress. I gathered the fabric at the base of her back with a dragonfly brooch to create a waist and to stop it from sagging under the armpits. She thanked me for saving her from using a safety pin! After these two incidents, I was looking for more ways to use my brooches!
My goodness! The ladies need to chill! Thank you Carolyn for your article. I am 71 and found it to be delightful. I have some beautiful brooches from Thailand that I will be wearing because of you. Some are new ways for me.
I have a hummingbird brooch in hematite stones, very subtle. It was my mother’s and I wear it on an overcoat to remind me of her.
That hummingbird brooch sounds so special!
Now I have more reasons to wear the beautiful 18k Italian, double oval, gold brooch my dad gave to my mom back in 1962. I like all of your ideas and agree that some peoples’s remarks are just snarky. One can disagree and still be nice about it.
Great ideas as we age we need help I am 76 and always have worn brooches
Some good ideas on ways to wear brooches. They are my favorite piece of jewelry and I have many! I like them better than earrings and necklaces because they can be unique. People always notice them.
Once upon a time I was shopping with my girlfriend and I saw a beautiful green rhinestone brooch and a green tweed newsboy cap. I told her I would put that pin on the hat! But she thought I was nuts. She bought them for me for my birthday regardless and I have worn them together and apart ever since. I love a good brooch. Thanks for confirming that I’m not necessarily nuts! 😊
Thank you for your article. I have so many brooches and pins that I love and now you’ve given me some fresh ideas as to how wear them.
I loved your article. I even signed up to receive more articles through email. I was not surprised to see the number of rude comments from the negative women. In today’s world which is full of hate, one can expect that kind of behavior. Please be kind. There are other ways to express an opinion other than saying that something is “boring”. It may be boring to you, but not to me.
Loved the article as I have several brooches, and don’t wear them anymore. Now I want a wrap coat and a beret! Any ideas where I can find them on-line? Not going back to France anytime soon. Thank you.
I really loved all the ideas..some new to me and some reminders that I really want to try.
Also Love seeing how beautiful you always look in your pics too!
Thanks for sharing 😉
Thank you! I am happy that you got new inspiration out of this – that was the goal!
I enjoyed the article. I was given a 4 inches golden sword brooch as a birthday gift that I have no idea how to wear it. I’d be very much appreciated if you could give me some ideas, Mrs Arentson!
Oo that sounds unique! That could be a really cool pairing for a black or navy blazer.
Hate to break it to you but that’s exactly where women have been wearing brooches forever!
Gotta love timeless style!
Thank you so much for this article! I have worn brooches since high school (I’m 60). I’m not big into necklaces, but I’ve always thought a pretty or unique pin is a great alternative. By the way, I’m sorry for the ridiculous verbal abuse I read in several of the previous comments. The vitriol from those people was embarrassing to read! I understood what your article was about, and all your points and opinions were concise. Thanks again 😊
Thank you for understanding the point of the post 🙂 I love that you’ve made brooches a part of your personal style!
I wear a brooch on my hat. One hat is a straw with an upturned brim and fabric around the base. I particularly like a bee but anything like a butterfly or dragonfly would be fine. It really doesn’t have to be an insect. A flower or any animal or anything you like. Also how about a brooch attached to a necklace. I remember a famous model wearing three strands of long pearls with a dark red brooch attached to the side. How about attaching it I. the hair.
Thank you for the article finally I see something I’ve been doing for years with my brooch’s expensive non expensive thrifty ones some given to me and special s from my mother
I find it amazing that in today’s world with so many problems people spend this amount of time tearing apart such a benign subject. My one comment is that I think one’s age has an impact on how some of these things might look. At 71, I would hesitate to wear a brooch on my denim jacket, but I think it would look great on someone younger. And I did find one or two ideas that I might try. Maybe they’re nothing new but that I’ve simply forgotten them! Thanks for the reminder!
