As the summer days arrive in Paris, the fashion landscape in the City of Lights inevitably undergoes a transformation of its own, with layered looks and gorgeous coats making way for flowy dresses and linen shorts. It’s no surprise that Parisian women seem to have a way with fashion, effortlessly and elegantly wearing looks that keep them cool and comfortable while still (of course!) keeping their style at the forefront. Whether you are already a fan of French fashion or just looking to explore some Parisian-inspired outfits, we’re diving straight into these curated looks, inspired by our baguette-loving friends over in Europe. French girl status, here we come.

1. mini linen dress + sandals + sunglasses + straw bag

parisian summer outfit

dress | sandal | sunglasses | bag

This lightweight linen mini dress is the perfect piece to start with. Its simple silhouette, breathable fabric, and romantic sleeves make for the perfect summer dress for strolling on the streets of Paris.

Beyond being a great way of keeping cool, the linen material used in this piece lends an elevated, luxurious feel to the look. A square neckline makes for a flattering touch, while a cutout detail on the back adds an extra touch of flair (and breathability!).

When it comes to shoes, there’s no going wrong with a simple pair of tan sandals when in Paris. Interlocking straps make for a beautiful, detailed pattern on the shoes, and a chic square toe gives a subtle yet elegant feel.

For fashion enthusiasts like us, it’s important to keep style in mind – but comfort has to be just as high on the priority list! Sandals like these are perfect for casually strolling out and about on the weekends, from brunch with your girlfriends to spending some quality time with your family at the park.

These rectangular sunglasses bring an elegant edge to this feminine, romantic look, making for a true Paris-style accessory. Blending timeless design and some contemporary elements, this pair of sunglasses can truly transform your outfit. If, like me, you’re all about classic pieces that never go out of style, accessories are a perfect opportunity to switch up elements in your closet as the seasons change.

This “honey pot” basket bag is the perfect example, infusing an undeniable and seamless summer feel to your look with style, personality, and elegance.

2. crop tank + straight leg jeans + leather belt + ballet flat + straw tote + hoop earrings

parisian summer outfit

tank | jeans | belt | flats | tote | earrings

No matter the season, jeans are always in. Especially if you’re dressing in a French girl style. For the summer version of this classic, fan-favorite look, start with this simple cropped tank. This white fitted top will keep you cool and comfortable under the sun, pairing perfectly with high-waisted pants. Made from incredibly soft, ribbed fabric, this tank features a flattering fit that balances beautifully with the silhouette of the jeans.

Finding the perfect jeans will always come down to personal preference! If you haven’t found your match or are looking to explore some different styles, then straight-leg jeans are a good option to consider.

These 90s pair of light wash, straight jeans feature a high-waisted fit, hugging the hips and thighs to support and lift. Comfort stretch fabric ensures that the jeans fit comfortably from the first time you ever put them on, and straight legs bring balance to your look while still keeping things breathable and comfortable.

Bring the two main elements of this look together with a thicker black belt. Not only does this accessory bring some visual interest, but it also allows for a more flattering overall fit!

We know just how much French girls love a classic ballet flat, and the same thing can be said for a pair of Mary Jane flats. This newly popular style has climbed the style charts over the past few years, bringing a charming touch to a classic style. This pair of flats ties in beautifully with the belt detail in this look, balancing the black accents throughout the outfit and working to bring it all together.

From the farmer’s market to the mall, this large straw tote is the ideal bag choice for a Parisian summer look, bringing in some natural elements and texture to an otherwise more basic ensemble. These gold-toned, textured hoop earrings add a delicate final touch to this outfit, while also tying into the gold hardware on the belt – after all, it’s about the small, intentional details to make an outfit special.

3. rib tee + high-waist denim shorts + farmer’s market basket + espadrilles + bandana + coin pendant necklace + cat-eye sunglasses

parisian summer outfit

tee | shorts | bag | sandals | bandana | necklace | sunglasses

A high-quality white tee is high on the list of any capsule wardrobe out there. Made from Pima cotton and elastane, this shrunken fitted tee is perfect for pairing with looser bottoms, and features ribbed fabric that keeps you comfy at all times.

Featuring a longer length and subtle frayed hems, these jean shorts complement the fitted white shirt perfectly, making for an all-around easy and breezy summer look that will get you through heat waves and sunny days in general.

These high-rise shorts are made from slightly faded light wash denim, and a slightly longer length that hits at about mid-thigh makes them perfect for many different occasions as well.

A farmer’s market basket bag is the perfect weekend accessory, adding a summery feel to your look while also contributing function and great style. Its short handle makes for an elegant touch as well, seamlessly elevating the more casual pieces of the outfit with this one simple touch.

A pair of espadrilles is the perfect spring and summer choice for when you are feeling like you want to spice things up without committing to more uncomfortable shoes or heels; in particular, this design ensures that the shoes are well secured, meaning there’s no need to sacrifice your comfort for some extra style points and a little height boost as well!

Simple, classic outfits are the best, but styling with special touches is what takes a look to the next level and into your personal style territory. This paisley print bandana adds a bright touch of red to this ensemble for a special element, bringing variety in both the color palette and the pieces of the look.

The best part? There are tons of ways to integrate this bandana into your look – from wearing it as a headscarf to tying it around your bag handles or your neck, the possibilities are endless when it comes to styling this piece.

When it comes to jewelry, French women tend to lean more towards – you guessed it – classic, daintier pieces that add a touch of delicate femininity to a look without being overwhelming.

While there are certainly exceptions to this rule, this coin pendant necklace is a great example of a Parisian-inspired piece of jewelry. Especially if you are planning on taking this look on vacation, staple pieces like this are perfect for wearing with more than one look while achieving the same beautiful result.

To protect your eyes and finish off this look in ultimate fashion, this pair of cat eye sunglasses do the trick. Featuring their timeless, popular silhouette, these cat-eye accessories keep your eyes protected while also adding yet another layer of chic to your ensemble.

4. oversized button-down + straight jeans + watch + slide sandal + woven belt + straw tote + earrings

parisian summer outfit

shirt | jeans | watch | sandals | belt | tote | earrings

A classic button-down is yet another essential in the French girl’s closet. Worn tucked in, loose, or whatever other way you like, this piece truly exemplifies what it means to be versatile and timeless.

In a striped blue pattern, this shirt brings a subtle but fun pop of color and pattern to the table in true summer fashion. Perfect for pairing with your go-to pair of jeans, shorts, or even as a bathing suit cover-up while you’re on vacation, this classic will always find a way to sneak into your closet rotation.

This time in a slightly darker wash, these 90s straight jeans also work beautifully within this look. Offering plenty of lift and support up top while keeping a straight silhouette down the legs, this piece brings instant balance and structure to any look.

I’ve touched on the dainty and timeless aspect of French girl jewelry, and this watch falls in line with that philosophy. Delicate, small, and simple in design, this bracelet watch instantly polishes this more casual look with its charm.

Keep things super comfortable in the shoe department with these slide sandals. Versatile, these sandals are also great for pairing with any type of silhouette, from dresses and skirts to shorts and long pants.

Ensuring that your feet stay ventilated, comfortable, and secure through the double-strap detail, these sandals also add a gorgeous brown shade to the color palette of your look. As a last final touch, the gold-toned buckle detail complements the watch and helps to tie the whole ensemble together just like that!

This brown woven leather belt allows for many more ways to creatively style this button-down and blue jeans. Bringing texture and some more structure to this outfit, this accessory also features a similar, beautiful brown shade to the sandals.

Keep the delicate and classic vibes going with these small, puffed hoop earrings. Beyond subtly framing your face and adding some interest to the top part of your look, this gold detail also ties in perfectly with the other accessories, making for a cohesive and effortless final result.

For a more structured but still slightly slouchy and more casual bag, add this straw tote to your look. Spacious, convenient, and very much the summer vibe, this bag is the cherry on top.

5. lace top + wide-leg jean + straw bag + pumps + coin pendant necklace

parisian summer outfit

top | jeans | bag | pumps | necklace

This delicate lace top can be said to be an essential of French style, making for a feminine, romantic touch that is often paired with more masculine pieces like blazers. In this outfit, this lace top is the perfect choice to keep you cool as temperatures rise, while still adding some character and charm to your look at the same time.

On the bottom, pair your lace top with these wide-leg jeans. Featuring front patch pocket details, these pants bring interesting proportions to this look, while allowing your legs to breathe throughout its silhouette. Its cropped length makes for the perfect summer touch, perfect for even better breathability and for showing off your shoes (who doesn’t love that?).

This straw basket softens this look even more with its charming shape and natural texture that makes this outfit look straight out of the streets of Paris, while a pair of pointed pumps give you a little block heel boost and injected-pod cushioning, ensuring that you stay just as comfortable as you feel confident. Here, black shoe ties nicely with the lace top, bringing balance to the overall ensemble and making it work beautifully together.

A simple and classic coin pendant necklace gives you that final delicate touch, complementing the hardware of the bag and polishing the look with subtlety.

6. linen vest + slim jeans + woven ballet flats + woven raffia tote + small hoop earrings

parisian summer outfit

vest | jeans | flats | tote | earrings

It’s not a surprise that linen is a top-contender fabric for the spring and summer times, so it’s always fun to try out some of your favorite silhouettes in their warm-weather versions. This gorgeous linen vest makes for a flattering fit through a figure-framing silhouette and seam detailing. Delicate, classic, and modern at the same time, this piece pairs beautifully with a wide variety of different bottoms for different looks all summer long.

For those who prefer to find the middle ground between skinny jeans and straight-leg styles, then this slim-fit pair is just right. With a slim straight-leg fit, these white jeans strike the perfect balance, resulting in a style that is not too wide and not too tight, either! Through a high-rise waist, these jeans feature a flattering fit that’s perfect for pairing with slightly cropped or overall shorter tops.

These woven ballet flats bring a variety of different elements to level up this already gorgeous look. The texture from the woven leather and the brown color of these flats ground this almost monochrome look, giving them a much-needed extra touch.

This tote is the perfect choice for this specific ensemble – and many others! Its style seamlessly and elegantly brings together the colors, natural textures, summery materials, and the neutral palette of the other elements to make for a cohesive, beautiful final look.

A long shoulder strap makes this large bag easy and comfortable to carry, while a subtle logo characterizes the front part. Add on these delicate gold earrings to polish off the look and bring some interest upwards!

7. classic garçon shirt + long linen shorts + leather belt + top handle bag + square toe ballet flat

parisian summer outfit

shirt | shorts | belt | bag | flats

I mentioned the versatility of a good button-down before, and I’ll do it again! This outfit is an example of the hundreds of styling tricks and techniques that you can try with a classic piece like this.

Made from cotton, this shirt features a very straightforward silhouette. For this look, I recommend tucking this shirt into the shorts, as well as leaving a few buttons undone at the top, and rolling up your sleeves mid-way up your arm. Small styling details like these can immediately and drastically transform an outfit (which is why it’s fun to play around with the final look once you have your pieces together!).

These shorts give off a real South of France feel, featuring flowy fabric, an elegant longer length, and an elastic waist for optimal comfort during your relaxing day under the sun. Beyond their chic look, these shorts also include pockets and a high-rise fit for comfort and style.

Accessorize this look with a dark brown leather belt, bringing all of the neutrals together and cinching in the waist for a chic mid-waist detail. This gorgeous tote bag once again works to bring the various elements of this outfit together as one, featuring the colors, natural fabrics, and gold hardware from the other pieces in its own design.

With both a shorter handle and a strap, this bag is easy to carry whichever way is more comfortable for you, while prioritizing style at all times. Opt for this beautiful pair of ballet flats for the ultimate French summer style.

With its square toe, these flats give you some variety when it comes to the classic flat silhouette, while still honoring the original design that is loved by so many people. Some slightly more square details bring a contemporary flair to the shoe, while still also allowing it to maintain a very traditional feel at the same time.

8. short-sleeve top + wrap skirt + straw bag + lace-up espadrilles + small hoop earrings + cat-eye sunglasses

parisian summer outfit

top | skirt | bag | shoes | earrings | sunglasses

Think classic white t-shirt, but better! This short-sleeve top kicks off this next look, already making for a lightweight, breezy foundation you’ll be rocking during the summer months. With beautiful pleat detailing in its design, this shirt includes button closures in front and a slightly shorter length that makes it ideal for pairing with high-waisted skirts and bottoms.

Pair that romantic top with this even more romantic skirt for a perfect and breezy warm-weather outfit. Made from viscose crepe fabric, this a-line design features a small, delicate floral pattern and four exposed buttons on the front side. While other floral prints might be better off limited to the springtime, this pattern is gorgeous for both the transitional seasons and the warmer months of the year, maximizing the looks in your closet!

Grab your structured straw bag for the charming summer accessory we know and love, and you’re ready to hit the town! For shoes, opt for these wedge espadrilles for another romantic touch that also works to elongate your figure. Lace-up details make this shoe choice pair perfectly with the lightweight skirt.

Add a pair of subtle, everyday hoop earrings for a delicate final touch, and some red cat-eye sunglasses to keep your look fun and chic at once.

9. linen wrap dress + mules + square earrings + woven straw tote

parisian summer outfit

dress | mule | earrings | tote

Wrap dresses are perfect for any time of year, and this linen design might just take the winning spot for the summer season. This summer staple fabric is breathable, chic, and flattering, and this short-sleeve dress also features a sophisticated look and comfortable fit for whatever your summer plans might have in store.

Its gorgeous silhouette means that less is more – accessorize with some small gold-toned earrings for an extra polishing touch and true French girl summer style.

As for your bag and shoes, this woven straw tote and woven mule work beautifully together to bring texture and an effortless summer flair. There you have it – effortless and ever-so-chic!

As we gear up for the summer season, I’m more excited than usual to shop for some new classic pieces. After going to Paris this past fall and seeing the iconic French style in person, I have classic French outfits in mind while I’m choosing pieces to wear in the upcoming summer months. French girl style in the summer is unmatched! Their style is a great inspiration for ensembles that look as beautiful as they are comfortable and elevated.

With all of the lessons I learned from the streets in Paris in mind, I’ve put together 12 French summer outfits to hopefully help as you’re shopping the racks (or the Internet) to freshen up your closet for the upcoming season.

1. linen vest + wide-leg jeans + leather bag

french summer outfit - linen vest wide leg jeans leather bag sandals

vest | wide-leg jeans | sandals | bag | bracelet

A neutral color palette is a favorite of French women for its versatility, and the ability to mix and match pieces. Neutral colors will never go out of style, and make for a chic summer look.

Start off this neutral look with a linen vest. Not only does this vest act as a chic alternative to a basic tank, but it’s a great layering piece to transition through the seasons when layered over a short-sleeved or long-sleeved tee, or maybe even over a turtleneck in the winter months. Plus, linen is the perfect material for summer due to its thin fabric, and ability to help your body handle heat.

On the bottom, a pair of light wash jeans is the perfect accompaniment for this cool weekend look. Accessorize with leather details, like this minimalist tote, and sandals with a raffia detail. A gold bracelet is a finishing detail.

2. linen tank top + midi floral skirt + mary janes

french summer outfit - linen tank midi skirt basket tote mary jane heels

tank top | midi skirt | straw bag | mary janes | gold hoops

Speaking of neutral colors, you can’t go wrong with a classic black and white look. This look again calls for a linen top, this time in the form of a boat neck tank. This one from Banana Republic also features a fun detail of a button-up back. The light color and linen fabric mean this is the perfect style for especially hot days.

French girls love the midi skirt for their beauty and practicality. It offers the perfect amount of coverage for modesty and allows you to go about your day with enough coverage for an active schedule, while also allowing you to show off your favorite pair of shoes.

Transition your Mary Jane low heels from winter to summer with this look, with a block heel that makes them comfortable enough for walking. A woven basket bag and gold earrings complete the look.

3. floral top + flare jeans + straw bag + sunglasses

french summer outfit - floral top flare jeans woven sandals basket tote

top | jeans | sandals | straw bag | gold hoops | sunglasses

French summer style is all about easy looks that are comfortable but elevated. You don’t have to overthink it! When you’re putting your outfit together inspired by French fashion, don’t be afraid to mix textures and aesthetics to create something new.

Start this look with a floral top – this one features flirty details like a small v-neck and a flutter sleeve. On the bottom, try a pair of jeans with a cropped length. Accessorize with woven leather sandals, a straw bag, gold hoops, and a pair of chic sunglasses.

4. striped button-down + white pants + gold watch + sandals

french summer outfit - linen trousers oversized button-down shirt gold watch

shirt | pants | sandals | watch | sunglasses

When it comes to summer heat waves, loose-fitting clothes in light colors are the perfect way to create a modest look without overheating. Start this look with a pair of white pants – bonus points if they’re in a linen material or linen blend!

Next, pull out one of your oversized shirts. If you don’t have one, a blue and white striped button-down is one of my go-to’s for French girl summer style. This is the perfect layering piece to leave unbuttoned, tied over your shoulders, or worn with pants, shorts, or even a skirt.

Accessorize with timeless pieces like a gold watch from Breda, strappy sandals, a brown belt, and sunglasses.

5. straight-leg jeans + floral top + pearl earrings + espadrilles

french summer outfit - floral top straight leg jeans basket tote

top | straight-leg jeans | espadrilles | tote | earrings

Need an outfit for a summer Sunday brunch? This is the perfect look, inspired by the streets of Paris. Some of my favorite sights in the city limits were the ornately decorated cafes teeming with flowers, arched over the entrances, and decorating the already-stunning architecture in the City of Lights. Florals are the perfect way to pay homage to the beautiful flowers and gardens of France.

This linen-blend top with a balloon sleeve is a great statement piece. On the bottom, keep things simple with a pair of straight-leg jeans in a light or medium wash. Finish with details like a pair of espadrilles, a straw tote, and pearl earrings.

6. oxford shirt + light pants + flip flops + gold watch

french summer outfit - oxford shirt basket tote light jeans gold watch flip flops

shirt | pants | shoes | watch | tote | sunglasses

This look is another way of wearing oversized shirts like a French woman. Style this boxy Oxford button-down as part of a monochromatic outfit, with a pair of light pants or pair of jeans. Monochromatic looks with white blouses are another key pairing for chic summer outfits.

No Parisian summer style is complete without the woven tote bag, as natural fabrics are the perfect way to add an organic element to your look. Flip flops are another way to help beat the heat, and make this a more casual look. Accessorize with a gold bracelet watch, and a chic pair of sunglasses.

7. little black dress + straw hat + woven sandals

french summer outfit - little black dress straw hat woven sandals

dress | sandals | straw hat | sunglasses | earrings

Elevate your little black dress for a summer date night with a midi or maxi length. This style of dress looks great on all body types, and is the perfect foundation for layering pieces, too. Throw a button-up shirt, jean jacket, or cardigan over your shoulders for a chic look, like a French woman would. Hot summer days can quickly turn into cool nights, so this extra layer is always a good idea, especially if you’re dining outside.

Accessorize this look with a pair of dressy sandals, or maybe a pair of low heels. And if you do plan to sit out in the sun, a straw hat and sunglasses are the perfect, practical touches. Add gold hoops for a classic touch.

8. mini dress + gold hoops + woven crossbody bag + sandals

french summer outfit - yellow mini dress woven crossbody cognac leather sandals

dress | sandals | sunglasses | earrings | crossbody bag

Breathable fabrics are key during warmer months – especially in Europe, where air conditioning isn’t as common as in the United States. Linen and cotton in particular are two fabrics to search out when it comes to building a summer capsule wardrobe.

Looking for more pieces to build up your summer capsule wardrobe? My Chic Obsession has a free resource full of shopping lists and guides that you can access here.

This linen mini dress in a buttery yellow is an excellent piece for a subtle pop of color. A relaxed summer dress is the perfect choice for days when it’s especially warm, or if you want to elevate your look in an effortless way. Accessorize with thin gold hoops, a pair of sandals in cognac leather, a woven crossbody bag, and gold-rimmed sunglasses.

9. floral dress + gold hoops + canvas tote bag + heels

french summer outfit - floral midi dress canvas tote bag sandal heels

dress | heels | tote bag | earrings

No French summer outfit list would be complete without a breezy sundress, and this floral midi dress is the perfect choice. Whether you’re walking through an arboretum garden, antique shopping, or enjoying coffee with a friend, this floral dress will fit right in as your new summer staple.

When it comes to your bag, a canvas tote bag is a great choice for a day spent shopping, or maybe setting up a small picnic. Canvas totes were everywhere when we were checking out the most popular bags in Paris – and bonus points if the print features a French artist! Sandals with a low heel and thin hoops complete this look.

10. button-down shirt + tank top + linen pleated shorts

french summer outfit - sunglasses white tank top button down shirt linen shorts sandals

shorts | button-down | tank top | sandals | tote | sunglasses | earrings

A white shirt or racerback tank top is the foundation of this summer style. Layers are key, in linen (there’s a theme here, for sure!), for a breathable look. Swap out a pair of denim shorts for these pleated linen trousers. Next, adding a striped or solid oversized button-down will act as your next layer, left unbuttoned.

Accessorize this style with retro round sunglasses with gold rims, leather sandals, gold earrings, and a French basket tote.

11. linen tank + striped linen pants + leather sandals

french summer outfit - woven bag linen tank linen striped pants

tank top | striped pants | sandals | bag | earrings

If you love relaxed-fit trousers, you’ll love this next look. Adapt that look for summer with these striped linen pants. The vertical stripes help to elongate your legs by drawing the eye up and down, while the faded blue and white stripes are neutral enough to pair well with a variety of tops.

For this style, try a linen tank. You could also choose a style with sleeves if you prefer, but for warmer days, a sleeveless white top is always a good idea. Accessorize with a wicker shoulder bag, gold earrings, and leather sandals.

12. floral dress + gold hoops + ring + basket tote

french summer outfit - floral midi dress sandals woven tote bag gold jewelry

dress | tote bag | sandals | ring | earrings

This red-orange color is one of my favorites right now for spring and summer! The floral pattern on this dress is beautiful and subtle, and offers a great contrast between the shade of the dress and the blue flowers.

Accessories are the key to elevating this look, which makes it fitting to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the south of France. Summer dresses are so beautiful and fun, and you can take this look to the next level with gold jewelry, a woven tote bag (this one looks like it might fit a bottle of wine to go), and white sandals.

Set Your Sights on Summer

Summer will be here before we know it, and spring sales are a great time to pick up pieces that will have you extra excited for warmer weather to arrive! Whether you’re going on a vacation or enjoying summer at home, hopefully, these French summer outfits will help inspire you with a little Parisian fashion inspiration.

It’s no secret that Parisian women have long been the epitome of chic, effortlessly mastering the art of looking both understated and impeccably dressed. This blend of casual elegance has captivated and inspired onlookers worldwide, spreading the essence of Parisian style around the globe. From the casual toss of a scarf and the perfect fit of a blazer to the appeal of a simple yet perfectly cut dress, it can be hard to define all of the elements that make this style so appealing for those who aren’t super familiar. Today, we’re diving straight into the essence of Parisian fashion, letting you in on the best tips and pieces to incorporate this aesthetic into your own wardrobe.

How To Achieve the Very Essence of Parisian Style

parisian style outfit

More than just a fashion statement, Parisian style can be argued to be more of a philosophy. That can sound dramatic, I know – but stick with me! This style prioritizes quality over quantity, and classic, versatile pieces over passing trends.

At the end of the day, it’s about building a wardrobe that feels both classic and fresh, no matter the season or the occasion. As we explore the core principles and pieces that define French fashion, you’ll discover that achieving that coveted Parisian look is much more attainable than you might think!

From perfecting the art of the tuck to finding the everyday bag that elevates your style, it’s all about embracing the simplicity and elegance of our friends across the Atlantic.

Of course, it’s not just about the trips and tricks; it’s also about the pieces too. Here, I’ve included some of my top recommendations for those looking to bring timeless pieces into their collection. Whether you’re looking to invest in a few key items or freshen up your entire wardrobe, I’ve got you covered with curated suggestions that will infuse your closet with that Parisian flair.

As we go through this list of Parisian style tips, it’s important to note that there are always exceptions to a rule! Especially when the subject is fashion, interpretation and personal style play a massive role in determining a simple look – it’s what makes fashion so interesting. Let’s get into it.

1. Less is More

Beyond the simple silhouette lies the concept of intentional choice. Versatility is a key element in any Parisian wardrobe, with every piece serving multiple purposes such as blending seamlessly from day to night or casual to elegant.

This approach to fashion isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a lifestyle choice that values quality over quantity, classic over trendy, and slow fashion over fast. In its essence, Parisian style can be a great way of learning how to invest in quality pieces that we’ll wear and cherish for years to come!

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with trends! New styles – or even old ones that make their comeback – are fun to experiment with, and especially fun to complement our wardrobes with if we are ever in the mood to try out something new. When it comes to developing a personal style that is classic, versatile, and always elegant, going for Parisian style is a great way to begin.

2. Ballet Flats Galore

As you learn more and more about Parisian and French girl style as a whole, you’ll see that there are certain quintessential closet staples that there’s no getting away from. In the shoe department, ballet flats are definitely part of this category. Especially in a big city where walking is a given for many, there’s no need to wear heels to look like the everyday Parisian girls – it’s about keeping it stylish and comfortable.

While ballet flats are certainly timeless and sophisticated in appearance, the Parisian love affair with this shoe design is also a nod to practicality as it embraces the Parisian lifestyle full of leisurely strolls and spontaneous adventures.

It’s about looking great and being prepared for it all – from a day that might include a visit to a gallery, a walk along the Seine, and a dinner at your favorite bistro. Like many of the other pieces that help to make up Parisian fashion, ballet flats bring with them practical elegance that ensures style never means compromising on comfort. If you ask me (and the French!), true chicness comes from feeling as good as you look!

Madewell The Betsy Ballet Flat

A pair of black flats is an essential part of any Parisian style closet – and you’ll definitely be grateful for these comfortable and versatile shoes in the days when you just can’t figure out what to put on. Always adaptable and complementary to almost any look, these flats are dependable pieces you’ll find yourself returning to often.

Jeffrey Campbell Arabesque Ballet Flat

Chanel-inspired, this cap-toe ballet flat is a great way of bringing some variety into your closet while still keeping your neutral colors in mind, understated and elegant. For a more casual, relaxed outfit, this chic shoe can instantly dress up and polish your look within a moment’s notice.

Sam Edelman Michaela Mary Jane Flat

While I know this isn’t technically a ballet flat, I had to include a Mary Jane style shoe when talking about the style of the French capital. Another very popular option among women in Paris, Mary Jane flats are just as reliable and versatile, beyond infusing your look with an accessory that’s equal parts timeless and trendy (here’s to circular fashion!).

3. Mastering the Tuck

It’s safe to say that the French have elevated tucking in a shirt into an art form. Whether it’s a full tuck, half-tuck, or even a barely-there tuck, this simple styling detail can go a long way in defining your silhouette and instantly polishing your look.

Of course, there can be other more specific uses for a tuck in your look, from showing off your high-waisted pants to playing with the proportions of your outfit!

J. Crew Classic Shirt

This neutral, classic shirt is the perfect piece to tuck into your jeans or trousers in general. Whether you go with a skinny belt or a subtle tuck that gives your look just that extra touch of polish, there’s no going wrong with this must-have Parisian street-style piece.

While this may seem like a dressier option for many people who aren’t used to the classic Parisian look, a button-down can be argued to be a big part of the overall look of the French woman.

4. Neutral Territory

This next tip is sure to make it into the rulebook of any classic wardrobe, and it is definitely up there for French fashion. Parisian style thrives on a palette of blacks, whites, beiges, and grays, allowing for endless combinations of effortless style every time. For a truly versatile and adaptable wardrobe, neutral tones are a must!

Of course, intentional accents of bold or bright colors, as well as some patterns like leopard print, can elevate a classic outfit and take it to the next level. In particular, red, navy blue, and Breton stripes all bring some more visual interest and an extra dash of French flair to your look.

Sézane Collete Marinière

This striped top is the perfect example of what it means to integrate very delicate subtle colors and patterns in your look the French way. Made from 100% cotton and featuring the famous Breton stripes, this top brings visual interest to a look without detracting from its overall elegant and sophisticated feel.

5. The Right Accessories

Unsurprisingly, Parisian style also tends heavily towards a few accessories that can be used to define their style. The scarf is definitely a part of this group, offering both function and flair to any basic look.

Beyond its ability to level up any outfit, this accessory also brings versatility in its many styling options – always the best pieces to style! Options include tying the scarf around your neck, draping it over your shoulders, and knotting it onto your handbag! Just like that, an extra layer of quintessentially French texture and color.

6. Minimalist Jewelry

When it comes to jewelry, Parisian fashion can be defined once again by the “less is more” philosophy. Timeless and classic jewelry that often leans more on the dainty side is preferred, as pieces are able to seamlessly go with any outfit.

In Parisian style, jewelry seems to add a gentle layer of delicate femininity, polishing up any look while still featuring an understated look at the same time.

Monica Vinader Hammered Pendant Necklace

A simple pendant necklace is a great way to go about incorporating this subtle but present gold touch.

7. Closet Staples

Almost like a capsule wardrobe, certain key pieces make up the essentials of French style, and are go-to designs in everyday wear. From a trench coat to a cashmere sweater, Parisian women know the value of classic pieces.

When it comes to building your closet and finding your staples, it is always best to invest in quality when possible! These pieces are the go-tos of your closet, transcending seasons and trends for years to come.

Beyond a trench coat and a cashmere sweater, a well-fitted, great pair of jeans is a must in any Parisian wardrobe. Opting for a style that flatters your natural shape – be it straight-leg, skinny, or a more relaxed boyfriend cut – ensures that these jeans can be the foundation for countless outfits over time.

A crisp white shirt also ranks high among these staples, offering endless versatility and an undeniably classic aesthetic. This piece can serve as a blank canvas for accessorizing, be worn under a jumper for a preppy look, or even be styled in a more relaxed way when tucked into your favorite pair of jeans.

While these are certainly not the only pieces that make up the staple of the Parisian wardrobe, this is definitely a great place to begin!

This classic white button-down is a favorite piece for its versatility, fit, and quality. Featuring a gorgeous silhouette and made from 100% organic cotton, this shirt offers comfort and style all at once.

Sézane Scott Trench Coat

What is French style without a traditional trench coat? From spring to winter and in between, this coat will be by your side as you navigate the greater part of the year in true Paris style.

Madewell The ’90s Straight Jean

A pair of straight-leg blue jeans belongs in every closet, from France and back! A good fit is essential for this piece to do its part in both your casual and classic looks – and these jeans give you just that. A little bit of stretch ensures these jeans are comfortable – and very flattering – from the jump.

8. A Tailored Fit

Since French style tends to lean more toward classic silhouettes and simple lines, a great fit is a big part of the appeal and luxurious vibe of French style – so don’t shy away from a little tailoring!

Especially when it comes to special occasions and timeless pieces you’ll come back to, it can be worth making sure that your clothes look like they were made just for you.

Of course, tailoring is expensive and can add up! While it’s definitely an easy way to get your closet looking Parisian, this same effect can be achieved simply by shopping more intentionally.

It is definitely a time-consuming process that takes some effort, but looking for the perfect fit before investing in high-quality pieces is also a great way of measuring whether something is right for you or not. Win-win!

9. Embrace Vintage & Pre-Loved Finds

Incorporating vintage or second-hand pieces into your wardrobe is another amazing tip for getting that European flair into your collection. Just like many of its neighboring countries, Parisians have a deep appreciation for the past, and a well-chosen vintage piece can add that unique flair to make your outfit stand out.

Beyond being a great way of upgrading your style, investing in pre-loved items is a more sustainable way of approaching fashion, aligning with the French value of prioritizing quality over quantity.

10. Find Your Statement Bag

Much like their approach to other accessories and clothing pieces, Parisians lean more towards investing in a few quality handbags as opposed to various ones of lesser quality. While this is definitely not meant to say that French women tend to have conservative handbag collections, there are certain styles that tend to be more popular.

From large, slouchy leather bags to small, structured handbags, the style possibilities are endless.

Following a pattern, the key to a Parisian style handbag is in its versatility and timeless elegance. A classic leather tote can carry the essentials from a weekday at the office to a weekend getaway, while a chic, minimalistic crossbody bag is a testament to the practicality that defines French style.

Finding your ideal go-to bag can also involve playing with different seasonal textures and materials that add an unexpected, appropriate twist to a classic look. Think of a suede oversized bag paired with a wool coat in winter or a wicker basket bag that brings a touch of the South of France to a summer dress.

This slouchy bag is perfect for infusing an extra dose of style into your look – and keeping your essentials safe!

The Essential Mini Bucket Tote

Classic, casual, and perfect with anything! This bucket tote follows a popular French silhouette and will always have your back, no matter what you’re wearing.

11. Embrace the Masculine-Feminine Balance

French style is known for its androgynous edge, where a dress can be paired with an oversized black blazer and heels. This natural balance adds a sophisticated dynamic to any outfit, playing with contrasts to create an elevated, effortless look.

Incorporating menswear elements into a wardrobe doesn’t just have to stop at blazers, either. Pieces like classic leather loafers and crisp button-down shirts also lend a masculine feel to a look, and pair beautifully with feminine details that help to make up the Parisian approach we’re after! These “masculine” pieces bring structure and a more serious edge to softer pieces like silk blouses and lace tops.

Striking this balance the right way is also about the textures and fabrics you choose to incorporate. Combining a chunky knit sweater with a satin slip skirt, for example, plays on this contrast and emphasizes it in another way. In general, the seamless blend of structure and fluid makes the Parisian style so interesting.

Accessories can also play a crucial role in achieving this balance. A delicate piece of jewelry can soften a stern, masculine-inspired outfit, while a bold wide-leather belt can add weight to a lighter, more naturally feminine outfit.

12. The Lace Touch

While more structured materials are also very much used within French fashion, there is no denying the use of lace to make up the more romantic details in a well-thought-out look. With its intricate patterns and sheer elegance, lace contributed a touch of romanticism and refinement to any outfit, embodying that perfect blend of strength and delicacy that Parisian style is known for.

Incorporating lace into your wardrobe doesn’t mean you’re confined to traditional looks or formal occasions, either! Parisians have seemed to really master the art of incorporating lace in unexpected ways, making it a present and versatile component of daily wear.

A lace-trimmed camisole, for example, can add a hint of romance from under an oversized blazer, while a lace skirt can be downplayed and balanced with a chunky knit sweater for a look that’s cozy and chic.

In order to truly embody the Parisian spirit, make sure to stop and think about the color and specifications of your lace pieces. Opting for timeless shades like black, white, or navy will ensure your pieces stay relevant and versatile throughout the seasons and years.

Sézane Chlo Shirt

This shirt beautifully encapsulates a lot of the style principles of the French. The delicate lace-like embroidery detail that runs along the placket and collar of this top lends a soft, delicate touch to your look. Pair this shirt with a trench coat, leather jacket, or blazer for the ultimate Parisian outfit.

Sézane Chlo Shirt in Lace

If you want to take it a step further and fully embrace the romantic vibe, then this lace shirt is the way to do it. Beautiful, delicate, and well-crafted, this piece is sure to turn heads wherever you go – from down the block all the way to the streets of Paris. Once again, this shirt can be paired with more structured, masculine silhouettes for that coveted French balance.

Embracing Elegance: The Timeless Appeal of Parisian Style

Ultimately, the Parisian approach to style is about finding pieces that resonate with your personal aesthetic, serve your lifestyle, and stand the test of time, much like the Parisian approach to life itself!

In the world of French fashion, less is really more. This philosophy encourages us to seek out high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time, helping us to cultivate a curated closet that blends classic pieces, personal style, and individuality.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent hours scrolling through Sézane’s online catalog, dreaming of a closet that can reflect that effortless French elegance. As a fashion brand, Sézane has definitely seemed to master the art of combining contemporary design with timeless Parisian style, making it a go-to for women who are after that coveted flair. Naturally, the French brand has established itself as many people’s favorite brands when it comes to finding beautiful, quality clothing.

As much as I love to admire these gorgeous timeless pieces, I have to be real: it’s not always realistic to click “checkout” on every cart we fill up online – quality and style do often come accompanied by a hefty price tag, after all. Sure, this can be disappointing, but there’s no need to be bummed out for too long!

Investing in quality pieces when possible is a smart move, but for those of us watching our budgets while still wanting to channel our inner French girl, there’s good news! Dupe territory can be overwhelming, but that also means that there are hundreds of great pieces and alternatives just waiting to be discovered.

Before we dive into some of these pieces, let’s explore a little of what makes Sézane a reference for so many in the fashion industry, and how you can achieve a similar style without breaking the bank. (Not into history? Scroll on!)

The Sézane Appeal

Over the years, Sézane has established itself as a reference for the sought-after French aesthetic – think well-cut blouses, perfect-fit jeans, and a classic, timeless handbag that brings every look together. What sets this brand apart is not just the quality of their materials, but rather the lifestyle that they sell along with it.

Sézane unique charm can also be found in its sustainability efforts, as they work to champion slow fashion and be mindful of their own production processes. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling great in what you wear, knowing it was crafted with care for both people and the planet.

In the end, all of these aspects come together to result in a great product at a premium price. And though splurging for the “real thing” can be the right choice at times, other times, you may be interested in an alternative look. Let’s get into some dupes of the French brand’s most popular items!

sezane dupes

Emile Cardigan

Made from a majority blend of alpaca and wool, this soft cardigan has captured the hearts and Pinterest boards of women around the globe (including mine, of course).

This ultra-soft, oversized cardigan makes for a piece that’s comfortable and stylish in equal measure. Slightly puffed sleeves and a round, higher-neck cardigan define the silhouette of this cardigan and give it a truly elegant feel. I own this cardigan and I can attest to the comfort and coziness; the only downside is that it sheds.

Available in 17 colors, this style is a great way to brighten up your spring wardrobe this year!

Ribbed Crewneck Cardigan

Featuring a high neckline and a similar structure, this crewneck cardigan captures the essence of its Sézane version with its chic aesthetic and timeless silhouette.

Available in 3 neutrals, this cardigan can be easily matched with a variety of bottoms, as well as be worn as both a top itself or layered over your favorite t-shirt.

A soft knit fabric (with less chance of shedding) takes care of the comfort requirement, leaving you stress-free and ready to enjoy whatever your day has in store.

Saroise Top

Delicate touches such as uses of lace and embroidery can be argued to be true signature touches of French women in fashion. Especially when paired with more masculine pieces and silhouettes like oversized blazers, these feminine details come together beautifully in true Parisian fashion.

A blend of a silk blouse and a tank top, this lace-trimmed camisole perfectly represents this concept in action. Incredibly soft and comfortable, this top allows you to infuse your look with extra flair while also keeping things subtle and delicate at the same time. With scalloped lace detailing all along the front and back “necklines”, this top is a gorgeous choice for any classic collection.

Lace-Trimmed Camisole Top

This jersey camisole top has the same appeal as the “original”, with lace trim detail along the front neckline.

This soft material keeps things breathable and comfortable throughout the day or night, and a slightly higher neckline than the Sézane top is a great detail for those who like a little more coverage on the chest area.

sezane dupes

Betty Cardigan

Crafted from merino wool, this charming, structured cardigan is among the best-selling pieces of the brand. Available in a wide variety of neutral, bright, and bold colors and patterns, this cardigan features a more structured silhouette with a shirt collar and chest pockets.

Able to paired with anything – from jeans to skirts and trousers. This cardigan is truly versatile, and can easily blend into your closet to complement the pieces you already own and love. While this cardigan is not cropped, the style does fall slightly shorter than a traditional design would, similar to the length of a regular t-shirt.

This premium material ensures that you will stay comfortable in your cardigan, regardless of the weather. Perfect to wear both as a top or on top of your favorite white cotton tee, this cardigan can definitely make its way into many more looks than you may think.

Patch-Pocket Shacket

If you love the look but don’t love the price so much, then this Amazon dupe might be your perfect match. For (much) less than half of the price, this alternative is a great choice for those wanting to experiment with this style!

Structurally, this cardigan has the same defining features as the Sézane piece, featuring front pockets, button detailing, and a shirt collar. The length is also the same, not cropped but not quite as long as a traditional cardigan.

Details like the color of the buttons seem to once again be very similar in both styles. When it comes to the material, this item is listed as a “Merino” cardigan, though I’m not sure there’s a surefire way to confirm the exact material. This knit fabric, though, seems to be very highly regarded by hundreds of reviewers who have personally tried out this dupe.

Organic Cotton T-Shirt

This might look like a regular t-shirt at first, but fashion enthusiasts will know that the material and the cut of even the most basic staples really make a difference in the end result.

Made from 100% organic cotton, this t-shirt has been meticulously designed to be comfortable, timeless, and easy to style. With short sleeves, a rounded neckline, and a slightly oversized fit, this piece easily adapts to various different outfits you might go for.

Available in 11 different colors, this shirt can easily elevate your simplest look into one of the best French girl looks – all that’s missing is a great pair of jeans, some dainty jewelry, and a pair of Mary Jane flats!

Organic Cotton Tee

When it comes to a great quality shirt that you’ll want to keep returning to over and over again, the material is a really important element to consider – especially when searching for a great dupe.

Amazon can be an especially great place to go searching for dupes and good deals, since listings often come accompanied by hundreds of reviews to let you get a good idea of what to expect.

This t-shirt, also crafted from 100% organic cotton, includes all of the features of the Sezane version; a rounded neckline, short sleeves, and slightly oversized fit make this shirt ideal for styling while also guaranteeing comfort and a soft feel.

While the premium material of this t-shirt still raises its price, it’s safe to say that it offers very similar features to the original, while still offering a price difference.

Colette Marinière

French fashion lovers will know some of the history behind the famous Breton stripes, originally introduced as the uniform for the French navy. Known now for decades as one of the main French patterns to be used in clothing, the Breton stripes have become somewhat of a symbol for those who are looking to represent the European style all over the world.

This striped top seems to pay an ode to this piece of fashion history and tradition, as the brand’s own take on the famous pattern. Featuring a long sleeve, a round collar, and button details on the shoulders, this piece is another one that stands amongst the brand’s top-selling styles.

Like all of their other tops, this shirt is available in a very wide variety of colors, too (14, to be exact!). Depending on the shade combination and dominant color of each design, the stripe width may seem to differ.

Once again, this piece is crafted from 100% organic cotton, ensuring an incredibly soft feel and beautiful fit. Like many French wardrobe staples, this piece can be worn a bunch of different ways; layered over the top of a classic white button-down, on its own, or under a blazer, for example.

Modern Breton Shirt

Everlane’s version of the Breton tee is available in a much more limited color selection than Sézane, but it includes the most traditional combinations in the style – white & navy, and black & white! For those looking to build a versatile and timeless French closet, then these are the perfect choices for that.

Want a free French wardrobe shopping list to get you started? You can get that (& more) by signing up here!

Featuring long sleeves, made from 100% cotton, and a rounded neckline, this style once again matches a lot of the important elements of the Sézane style, while taking a more minimalistic approach at the same time.

In this comparison, the biggest difference seems to be the lack of shoulder detail that brings some added charm to the French brand’s piece. If what you’re after is a high-quality piece that will stick around, this version is definitely an option to consider.

sezane dupes

Scott Trench Coat

Especially as we find ourselves near the “springtime” start line, it makes sense to mention one of the top French closet essentials that go hand in hand with this time of year! A trench coat is likely to always be mentioned when the subject is Parisian fashion, and for great reason!

This ultra-elegant staple is the perfect piece to layer with and throw over various different looks, keeping you warm and protected against the weather while also keeping your style at the forefront.

This trench coat specifically flaunts a very traditional look, as well as a lot of the elements that you would want from a classic design. Featuring a tie-waist belt, raglan sleeves, and a large lapel collar, this piece carries the trademark essence of the French, falling beautifully on the body. Crafted mainly from 100% organic cotton, this piece also ensures comfort and a great feel.

Other details in this premium style include a button line both on the shoulder and on the cuffs, as well as a buttoned slit down the back. Small, intentional touches speak to the craftsmanship and intention behind the design, as well as, of course, the quality of the end result!

Classic Trench Coat

This trench coat dupe is a great alternative for those who are after a good quality piece that has the look, without having to make such a significant investment on the Sézane piece.

This Mango dupe also features a lot of the same elements, while also contributing a little of its own unique flair to the outfit. Made mainly from 100% cotton, this piece includes a tie-waist belt, a lapel collar, and a crossover design.

The difference can be found in small design details throughout the piece, with this design bringing a little more of a modern edge while still keeping things traditional and subdued at the same time.

This trench coat is a great dupe for the Sézane piece, as it can be easily styled with other pieces to make for a beautiful, classic, and undeniably French look.

Bilma Shirt

I’ve mentioned just how much a great button-down is a necessity in a French-inspired closet, and I’ll say it again!

This particular shirt pays an ode to that tradition, while also bringing a little bit of a different edge through this color and striped pattern. As opposed to a plain, light blue button-down, this style is great for elevating your look and turning heads as you stroll, while also very much keeping the essence of the style that you were planning on going with in the first place.

Like any other Sézane piece, this shirt contains various details that set it apart from other pieces, such as wide cuffs, mother-of-pearl buttons, and a large chest pocket. This shirt also features an oversized cut, as well as a traditional shirt collar and button-up front section.

An oversized fit plays into the androgynous French style aesthetic and is perfect for pairing with jeans to a more feminine skirt and heels.

Etiénne Shirt

This J.Crew dupe checks all of the boxes of the “original” piece, with skinny white stripes and a gorgeous, deeper blue collar. While this version does not have especially wide cuffs, it does feature an oversized fit and is made from 100% cotton!

This piece has become a fast favorite among clients of the brand. Like the Sézane shirt, this piece can easily be styled with many different bottoms for various types of looks. Small, white buttons also match the visual of the French brand, giving these two shirts a very comparable look!

Milo Classic Bag

Yet another best-seller, the Milo bag embodies the true spirit of French fashion. High-quality, compact, and incredibly classic in design, this handbag blends undeniable style and practicality for a conveniently fashionable choice.

The versatility doesn’t just end at its design, though. This bag features an adjustable strap that can be set to three different lengths, transforming your purse into different looks that can complement your outfits in different ways.

Crafted carefully by experts, this bag also includes a gorgeous gold-toned clasp that adds a delicate touch to your overall look.

Flap Bag

This faux leather Mango dupe nails the look of the Milo bag, with similar elements like the overall shape, the gold-toned magnetic clasp, and the color. Even better, this bag also features a long adjustable strap and two inside compartments to keep your belongings organized.

The biggest difference between these two styles seems to be in the material, as this bag features an animal print on the faux leather. While subtle, this texture does bring some extra character into your favorite ensembles.

Overall, this dupe offers one of the best price points in comparison to the Sézane piece – what could be better than getting the look for less?

Justine Basket

A straw bag is a perfect accessory for the hotter months of the year, giving our looks a sunny, breezy feel without the effort of a full tropical-inspired look.

Made in Madagascar, this impressive handbag features a hand-woven raffia exterior and double handles for carrying it both on your shoulder and on your hands. Interior lining keeps your belongings safe, and leather ties close the bag when you please.

A gorgeous fan structure defines the silhouette of the bag, giving it an extra touch of that summery feel.

Allington Tote

With double handles and a black and tan color profile, this bag is a great dupe for the Sézane basket.

The interior of this bag is lined and includes a detachable pouch that makes it that much easier to stay organized as you’re out and about through town or on a sunny vacation.

Seagrass straw is used on the exterior of the bag, resulting in a beautiful, malleable, and spacious handbag that still features that classic look. While these two bags differ somewhat in structure and use different materials, the overall look and feel they contribute to an outfit are certainly comparable!

For a far more affordable price, you’re able to infuse your warm weather looks with an incredible accessory.

Gabin Bag

This bag is another stunning piece from the high-end French brand and is a great choice for when you are going away for the weekend or just feeling like you want to adorn your outfit with an extra large accessory.

In this stunning camel color, this bag flaunts a casual, slouchy yet elegant structure. Made from 100% split cowhide leather, the bag features a suede-like appearance that softens any look while still contributing visually to your entire ensemble.

Leather Shopper Bag

Similar in the feel of the material and in its triangular, slouchy structure, this dupe makes for the same casual yet chic effect on your looks.

Made from 100% bovine leather, this suede bag features a shopper style that is also large in size, despite being significantly smaller than the Sézane handbag.

For the everyday, the size of this dupe is perfect for both convenience and aesthetic, as it leaves you with plenty of space to carry your personal belongings without calling for a huge fashion statement every time.

Finding Your Perfect Sézane Dupe

In the search for a quintessential French wardrobe, it’s clear that Sézane sets a high bar with its incredible designs and premium quality pieces. While investing in higher-end pieces is often a great call in the long run, the reality doesn’t always align with our ultimate dream wardrobe.

Sezane dupes are great alternatives for those of us who want to implement these styles into our wardrobes without having to commit to the price every single time.

The fashion landscape is filled with great alternatives that mirror the essence of this beautiful brand at a more reasonable cost. As you mix these stunning pieces into your daily wear, remember that the true heart of French fashion isn’t found in a single brand or price point, but instead in versatile and classic designs of all kinds!

Parisian apartments seem to embody the best of both worlds when it comes to balancing design elements. The most inspirational photos (and real-life examples) of Parisian apartment/French apartment style I’ve seen have the perfect blend of antique and modern, elegant and cozy, unique and traditional elements.

Of course, there are plenty of different styles that are found within Parisian apartment aesthetics. Whether that be the grandeur of Versailles or a more contemporary style, there are plenty of ideas to be found that can be incorporated into your own home to bring a little bit of French apartment living to you, no matter where you live. Read on for some inspiration to help you bring the charm and elegance of a Parisian apartment into your own space!

1. Versailles Inspired Decor

When it comes to the different subsets of Parisian-inspired decor that you can find inspiration from, if you prefer an elegant, traditional style, then you’ll probably like elements on this Versailles-inspired mood board.

To achieve this look, you’ll want to curate a collection of ornate, classical pieces. In this case, searching for treasures in your local antique shops will be a great place to start.

Furniture

Gilded, ornate furniture comes to mind first when I think of Versailles-inspired design. This gold mirror will shine in any room, whether it’s utilized over a fireplace mantel, on a dresser, or in a sitting room. A large mirror such as this is also a strategic design choice, as mirrors help reflect the light in smaller rooms to make them appear larger.

Light fixtures are also a great way to bring the Versailles-inspired look into your home. Crystal chandeliers and moody candles offer soft, elegant lighting to any room, whether that be your bedroom, living room, or dining space. And if you have great natural light in your space, even better! Large windows and high ceilings are another marker of the palatial architectural style.

Although not every home will come with working, built-in marble fireplaces, luckily there are alternatives out there at an affordable price to achieve a similar look in your living space. For example, standalone fireplace mantels are widely available (even on Amazon, like the one below) and come in all shapes, sizes, and finishes.

Walls

When it comes to wall coverings, don’t be afraid of wallpaper to achieve the Versailles-inspired look. And if wallpaper isn’t your style, bold but soft colors will help to contribute to a similar atmosphere. Also, don’t forget details such as crown molding, chair rails, and ceiling medallions. These may seem small in the grand scheme of things, but they’ll go far when it comes to adding an ornate, maximalist look to your room.

Floors

If you’re analyzing real photos of the Palace of Versailles, you’ll notice that parquet flooring is particularly popular (I’ll touch on this in the next section). However, marble would also make for a great choice depending on the room you’re decorating. It offers the same sort of grandeur and might be more fitting than parquet when it comes to an area such as the kitchen or a bathroom.

The modern Parisian apartment/French apartment style offers a beautiful balance of organic and inorganic elements, cold and warmth. When it comes to colors, this aesthetic tends to favor a clean base, such as white walls, and wooden floors. French style comes through in the layering of furniture, decor, and other details – from marble bookends and tables to gold frames and wall sconces.

Furniture

Paris apartments are full of a variety of fabrics and styles when it comes to furniture. Furniture sets are not typically found in French style, and you’ll often find pieces that complement rather than exactly match each other.

A statement couch is a popular choice to draw attention to a focal point in the living room of a French apartment. For instance, this green couch in a luxe fabric with wooden legs is a great example of a timeless piece that also acts as an anchor in your design.

As you look at the rest of your space, mixing textures is the perfect way to balance old and new, modern and traditional. An ornate, gold frame is the perfect way to balance the look of a sleek marble side table. Iron bookends, meanwhile, complement the look of soft white drapes, and a wooden coffee table.

Floors

Parquet floors are a staple in French homes. Parquet flooring is a type of wood flooring featuring distinctive, repetitive patterns. Historically this type of flooring was made by assembling it piece by piece, but now, most parquet floors come in tile form. From herringbone patterns to checkerboard to chevron, there’s a wide variety of styles to fit all kinds of tastes.

Besides wood, you might also consider flooring elements made of tile, or stone. These offer a balance to soft fabrics and furniture that you might use to decorate your space.

3. French Country Decor

French country style is the most “lived-in” style of the three subsets of French style. Markers of the French interiors include rustic comfort, soft patterns and hues, and unique, vintage accents. The traditional style balances decor items from a flea market with elevated pieces like crystal chandeliers or a quality coffee table.

Flooring

Warm, organic wood tones are the perfect way to set the foundation of your French country space. Whether you prefer a more traditional style of hardwood flooring or if you like the look of parquet floors, wood tones will help to balance out the other elements of this design.

And if you already have hardwood floors that are a little worn, don’t worry! The worn wood look is another staple of French country design, so no need to spend your entire budget on new ones, or refinishing them.

Walls

Soft colors are often a staple of French design and Parisian apartment/french apartment style. Whether that be muted blues, greens, or pinks, these colors are often found alongside warm neutrals.

Wallpaper is another popular choice when it comes to Parisian interior design. You’ll notice that even the wall coverings embody a sense of history and tell a story, sometimes in the very pattern or symbols found in the design.

Decor

When you go to decorate with French country design in mind, vintage elements are a great place to start. Antiquing is a fun adventure in and of itself, and you can find great deals on all sorts of finds that otherwise might be very expensive if you were to buy them firsthand.

Some items to keep an eye out for would be ceramic pots and lamps, vintage vases and dishes, and furniture items like wooden side tables, benches, etc. Antique pieces offset the starkness of more modern finds.

Decor is also a great place to bring color to your space. Whether it’s in an ornate rug or in the fresh flowers that fill your vases, a pop of color will instantly add warmth and life to your space.

French country decor is also the perfect design aesthetic in which to bring in heirloom pieces that tell a story and are meaningful to you. Whether you display your mother’s apron or grandparent’s hutch, pieces with a sense of history only add to the Parisian style. They also add an important piece of you to the room!

Furniture

If you’re looking to invest in a furniture piece for your own home with some French flair, look for comfortable pieces that are as beautiful as they are practical. A cozy reading chair will never go out of style, and one in a pattern or print is the perfect way to bring a bit of your personality to the piece. A padded ottoman bench, meanwhile, is the perfect addition to a hallway or entryway to stop at to tie your shoes.

Bring French Style Into Your Own Home

You don’t have to live in a centuries-old building to achieve the look of a chic Parisian apartment. Whether you have a more contemporary style or traditional style, there is inspiration for you found in French interiors.

The lessons that I always take away from the Parisian apartment/French apartment style include: layer and curate your space like you would a gallery wall, search for secondhand treasures, and balance design elements like light and dark, hard and soft. I’ve started to incorporate these lessons into my own home decorating, and I love the results – hopefully, you will, too!

Does the idea of “French fashion” seem overwhelming when it comes to applying the French girl style to your own wardrobe? Well, luckily for you, you can recreate 20 classic French style outfits with wardrobe essentials you probably already have in your closet. With a little flexibility, you can take inspiration from the looks below to put together classic French outfits that would seamlessly blend in on the streets of Paris.

1. striped button down + jeans + mary jane flats

classic french outfits

button down | jeans | mary jane flats | earrings | socks | belt

Elevate your weekend or casual Friday style like the French girls do by using classic wardrobe essentials with unique details, like the frill on these ankle socks or the rounded collar of this button-down shirt.

Stripes are an easy way to emulate Parisian style, and when designed vertically, they offer a slimming effect as well. Pair the piece with skinny jeans or straight jeans, with no holes or rips.

Next, match your belt to your shoes – like a black belt with this pair of Mary Jane flats. These shoes offer a fun, nostalgic look to the style. Finish the outfit with minimalist jewelry, like these gold and pearl earrings.

2. striped turtleneck + black pants + loafers

classic french outfits

striped turtleneck | loafers | pants | leather bag | sunglasses

Speaking of a striped shirt, here’s another great way to wear one paired with classic pieces you might already own. The fun detail here is the slightly ruched stitching on the shoulders, which adds a unique touch to the staple striped turtleneck.

Pair it with a relaxed pair of black trousers, making this look work-appropriate. Add a black leather crossbody bag, your favorite pair of loafers, and your favorite pair of sunglasses to complete the outfit.

3. crewneck sweater + white pants + trench coat + ballet flats

classic french outfits

sweater | pants | ballet flats (similar) | trench coat | earrings | purse

This look is straight from the streets of Paris. Parisian women are not afraid to sport white after Labor Day, and you shouldn’t be either! Pair your favorite white jeans or trousers with other neutral pieces for a chic look for work or play.

Dress up the camel sweater and pants with a trench coat – not only is it an ideal piece for your capsule wardrobe, but it’s the perfect layer to wear from fall to spring. Add a chic black shoulder bag and cap-toed flats (or some with a small heel) that are reminiscent of the iconic Chanel pair.

4. v-neck sweater + white tee + wide-legged jeans + sambas

classic french outfits

t-shirt | sweater | sneakers | jeans | purse

French girl style isn’t limited to office-ready looks. For more casual attire, a simple t-shirt goes a long way. Layer your favorite plain white shirt with a v-neck sweater for an easy way to create an eye-catching contrast in the top half of your look. Add a pair of wide-legged jeans for an updated version of today’s trending denim.

Finish the look with a sleek black leather shoulder bag in a rounded shape. As for footwear, we spotted Adidas Sambas all over the streets of Paris. Not only are they a fun take on the classic white tennis shoe, but they’re comfortable for logging miles of walking around the city. This look is the perfect way to elevate the “athleisure” that is more popular in American style.

5. plaid blazer + pleated skirt + knee high boots

classic french outfits

blazer | pleated skirt | knee high boots | purse | belt

A French woman’s wardrobe isn’t complete without an oversized blazer. And yours shouldn’t be either! This piece is among the timeless classics for a reason. A neutral, plaid blazer like this one will soon be one of your favorite blazers as it’s versatile enough to pair well with your capsule wardrobe, but can also act as a great statement piece for a unique style.

To continue building an academia-inspired look, add a pleated midi skirt, pulling out one of the colors of the blazer. Finish the look with neutral accessories in varying materials and textures like suede knee-high boots, a brown leather bag with gold details, and a classic belt.

6. red cardigan + dark jeans + leopard print flats

classic french outfits

cardigan | flats | jeans | necklace | belt

French girls love a pop of color, and this bright red is not only trending, but the perfect way to perk up your winter looks. Start with a cozy button-up cardigan, paired with straight jeans.

And if you’re looking to incorporate a statement shoe, try this pair of leopard print “smoking slippers”. Polish off the style with a sleek black leather belt, and a simple gold necklace.

7. lady jacket cardigan + white button down + khaki pants + ballet flats

classic french outfits

lady jacket | button down | pants | flats | earrings

If you want to add visual interest and contrast to your favorite cardigan and trouser pants, try layering a white button-down shirt underneath. The pop of white will draw your eye, and instantly make the look more intentional and put together. The same concept is true for adding a white t-shirt underneath your sweater.

Finish the look with a chic pair of ballet flats, and simple gold hoops. This would be a great look for the office, or even just an elevated style for a day out and about.

8. overcoat + little black dress + polka dot tights + ballet flats

classic french outfits

overcoat | tights | dress | flats | quilted bag

For colder months, dress up your little black dress with a chic overcoat. The neutral color of this one will ensure it pairs well with whatever you’re wearing underneath, and the gold buttons elevate the look with a subtle metallic detail.

When it comes to basics, paying close attention to the quality of materials and the tailoring will go far. Choosing more structured pieces will help with this, or pieces that are a majority fabric of wool or cotton.

Add another point of interest to your look with polka dot tights (these are said to be a trending item in the upcoming year, if you keep an eye on trends!). Finish the perfect dinner look with black ballet flats and a quilted shoulder bag.

9. velvet blazer + scarf + plaid pants + ankle boots

classic french outfits

boots | pants | tote bag | velvet blazer | white shirt | scarf

If you love incorporating new and interesting materials into your classic style, try velvet for a timeless and elegant statement piece. Dress up a plain white t-shirt with plaid trousers, a velvet blazer, and neutral accessories.

To emulate the classic French style, don’t forget to add a scarf! It’s the perfect alternative to your favorite necklace, especially in the winter months. Complete the look with ankle boots and a black leather tote bag that will be perfect for holding your office necessities.

10. green sweater + baseball cap + mixed metal watch + mini skirt

classic french outfits

green sambas | tights | sweater | watch | mini skirt | hat

If your 2024 resolution is to start adding more color to your wardrobe, create an effortless look by choosing one color to act as your accent. For this casual look, timeless pieces like a black mini skirt, black tights, and white sneakers prevent the style from becoming too trendy. Plus, the Samba sneakers pull the green back into the look within the stripes of the shoe.

Elevate bold colors with your styling, and addition of accessories like a mixed metal watch, and a logoless khaki hat.

11. white button down + flared jeans + basket weave tote

classic french outfits

button down | flared jeans | heels | woven tote | earrings

There are endless different ways to style a white button-down shirt, and endless styles of them to choose from. To elevate the piece, try choosing one with more structure, or unique details like this sleeve detail and length. You’ll never regret this must-have in French-girl style that can take you through all four seasons.

Take this look from day to night with flared jeans, sling-back heels, gold earrings, and a woven tote.

12. leather jacket + white tee + black jeans + veja sneakers

classic french outfits

leather jacket | black jeans | white tee | sunglasses | veja sneakers

What capsule wardrobe is complete without a leather jacket? The great thing about this piece is that it can be styled to fit your personality. Whether you prefer a more casual, slightly edgier look like the one above, or something more feminine like when it’s paired with a dress or skirt, a leather jacket is a fun statement piece that is perfect for a night out.

Start this effortless look with white sneakers, like this Veja pair. Next, add a pair of black jeans – a wider fit is perfect for this aesthetic. Add a long-sleeved white shirt, your leather jacket, and a pair of sunglasses for a cool, easy style.

13. olive turtleneck + pleated midi skirt + silk neck scarf + overcoat

classic french outfits

turtleneck | pleated skirt | knee high boots | earrings | scarf | coat

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that monochromatic looks will never go out of style. For this French girl-approved ensemble, start with a midi pleated skirt, and a turtleneck in a similar or identical color.

Use the sandwich theory to match your top (a black overcoat) with your shoes (a knee-high black boot). Top off the look with a French girl-approved silk scarf in an interesting pattern, and minimalist gold earrings.

14. blue sweater + scarf + canvas tote + veja sneakers

classic french outfits

sweater | tote bag | jeans | veja sneakers | socks | scarf

If you can’t beat the winter blues, join them! Start your look with a pop of color in a blue sweater. The lighter shade will ensure that this piece will take you effortlessly through your spring transitional outfits as well. Add a pair of wide-legged jeans in a light wash, a canvas tote bag, a cozy scarf, Veja sneakers, and ankle socks.

Canvas tote bags were a must-have on the shoulders of Parisian women that we spotted on our trip this fall. Wondering what other bags French girls were sporting? More here: A Guide to the Most Popular Handbag Styles in Paris.

15. rosette top + wide-legged trousers + mary jane heels

classic french outfits

rosette top | trousers | hoop earrings | mary jane heels

Sometimes it’s all in the details if you’re looking to take your look from ordinary to extraordinary. An eye for these details, whether it’s the tailoring, the fabric, or the pattern, will set you apart.

High-quality pieces don’t have to be expensive. They can be timeless classics that fit your personality, with little additions that make them a piece you’ll reach for time and time again.

Let’s take this halter top with a rosette detail. If you love florals but are looking for a way to incorporate them into your look in a unique way, this is the perfect alternative.

The black and white top is effortless elegance when paired with wide-legged trousers, and a small heel. Add silver earrings, and you have the perfect recipe for a holiday party or a dinner date.

16. pleated skirt + oxford shirt + knit sweater + chunky loafers

classic french outfits

pleated skirt | loafers | tights | sweater | button down | headband

Pleated skirts were all over Paris. Whether you prefer a mini skirt version or the midi version mentioned earlier in this post, they can be a great way to add interest to your look.

The academia aesthetic lovers will love this pairing with a chunky loafer, tights, a white button-down shirt, a layered crewneck sweater, and a headband.

It’s the perfect style for a day spent wandering a museum, sipping a hot coffee, or perusing your local bookstore.

17. white oxford shirt + pleated shorts + Chanel two-tone flats

classic french outfits

oxford shirt | pleated shorts | ballet flats | belt | earrings

Before we know it, warmer weather will return. Wondering how to transition a white button-down for spring and summer looks? Keep the elevated feel by pairing it with dress shorts, like this pleated pair.

Add a leather belt, and you have a flattering, yet cool outfit. Finish the look with cap-toed flats (whether you choose a pair of Chanel lookalikes or splurge for the real deal) and minimalist gold earrings.

18. Breton stripes shirt + flared jeans + trench coat + mule slides

classic french outfits

striped shirt | jeans | mule slides | trench coat | earrings | purse

There’s a reason we associate Breton stripes like these with boating and nautical-inspired aesthetics – they were originally worn by sailors to ensure they could be easily spotted in the water! There are also plenty of associations of the pattern with the French girl aesthetic.

You’ll be ready to walk the streets of Paris when you pair this striped shirt with flared or wide-legged jeans, mule slides, and a timeless trench. Finish the outfit with gold and pearl earrings for sophisticated yet minimal jewelry, and a black leather handbag.

19. denim shirt + white jeans + silk neck scarf + cowgirl boots

classic french outfits

denim shirt | white jeans | cowboy boots | neck scarf

The Western aesthetic was all over the streets of Paris and the boutiques we shopped this fall. It was like a little surprising piece of home that I hadn’t expected to see in the City of Lights, but it was fun to see how Parisian women were putting their own spin on the trend.

To ease into the aesthetic, pair tall cowboy boots, white pants, a denim shirt, and a neck scarf for a Parisian flair on the traditional American style.

20. oversized blazer + boatneck shirt + jeans + ballet flats

classic french outfits

oversized blazer | jeans | boatneck tee | ballet flats | sunglasses

One of the first things that I noticed appearing in French fashion over and over again was the blazer! Whether it was more fitted or oversized, had many buttons or one, patterned or solid, casual or elevated, the blazer was a French girl staple that we saw again and again on the streets of Paris in classic French outfits.

It makes sense – blazers work for all body types, and any age of women. They can be incorporated into a more casual look by adding a baseball cap and leggings or a pair of jeans, or elevated for work with trousers or chinos. For a look that could take you from casual Friday to happy hour, try pairing a plaid one with a black t-shirt, jeans, sunglasses, and chic ballet flats.

The Essentials of French Fashion

Whether you prefer a more casual look or are looking for inspiration for a night out on the town, hopefully, you found a look inspired by French fashion to fit any occasion.

But most of all, I hope this post helped you realize how many pieces you probably already own that can be paired together to create Parisian-inspired looks. And if you don’t have them, well, happy shopping as you continue building your capsule wardrobe!

French girl outfits – the magical place where style meets effortlessness to create a special mix of sophistication and (apparent) nonchalance. The appeal of French fashion is undeniable; more than just a style category, it’s a cultural phenomenon that has intrigued and captivated the fashion world for decades, and for very good reason. The big secret? Let’s find out together!

How to Dress Like a French Girl

French style is often characterized by its simplicity, timeless elegance, and the seemingly innate ability of French women to effortlessly throw together an outfit that exudes both comfort and class. It’s both a philosophy and an outfit formula that revolves around embracing individuality, investing in high-quality basic items, and mastering the art of looking polished without appearing overdone.

Fittingly enough, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about French fashion that goes beyond labels and trends: it’s really about cultivating an intentional wardrobe that stands the test of time and shines the light on natural beauty.

With this iconic style in mind, we’ve compiled 13 quintessential French girl outfits, with pieces ranging from classic cashmere sweaters to blazers and trench coats. Each ensemble is a testament to the timeless charm and impeccable taste that defines French fashion, following the same principles mentioned above. Get ready to infuse a touch of Parisian chic into your wardrobe – after all, who wouldn’t want to channel that effortlessly stylish charm?

French Girl Outfits

1. sweater + flare pants + ballet flats + tote

french girl outfits

sweater | pants | shoes | tote

French style is all about the basics, which is why we’re starting off with this true fashion staple and focusing on neutral colors. Combining the effortless style of classic French looks with high-quality items, this outfit follows the true blueprint of this style.

Start off with this organic cotton sweater that features a classic silhouette and a subtle cream color. Pair it with these righteously famous beige flair pants to maintain an overall chic and understated look.

For shoes, these simple leather ballet flats tie the outfit together with their neutral tone and sleek design. Run all of your errands in unparalleled style with this French favorite tote as your final touch – refined, casual, and perfect for your belongings, all at once.

2. sweater + mini skirt + stockings + knee high boot

french girl outfits

Ever heard of a French capsule wardrobe? A heightened focus on quality investment pieces makes French wardrobes notorious for their capsule quality; among themselves, quality staples are often easy to mix and match to create endless classic looks, and this next one is a perfect example.

This cable knit funnel neck sweater kicks things off with its rich texture and high neck detailing. Underneath, pair it with a striped wool-blend miniskirt that can peak out from your sweater and create a continuous silhouette.

Wear with a pair of classic black stockings and knee-high black boots for a simple yet undeniable French composition.

3. tee + bootcut jeans + long trench coat + ballet flats + bucket bag

french girl outfits

tee | pants | coat | shoes | bag

Among our favorite French staples is the trench coat. This super versatile piece can completely change or make an entire outfit with its strong presence and large size – so why not make it the star of the show?

Begin to build the foundation of your outfit by pairing some dark bootcut jeans with a box-cut tee. Remember, the trick to these simple basics is a perfect fit and, of course, unmatched comfort.

Pair the base with some cap-toe ballet flats to add some visual interest to your outfit without straying from the understated and classic feel.

Over the top, throw on your long trench coat and wear it open for a full view of every element present in your look. Instead of choosing a slightly more traditional beige trench coat, going with a slightly different color (while still remaining neutral) is a great way to add some variety to your outfits without straying from the desired aesthetic. To finish everything off, add this ultra-chic black leather bucket bag for a true blend of the modern and the timeless.

4. knit cardigan + cashmere t-shirt + jeans + ballet flats

french girl outfits

cardigan | t-shirt | jeans | shoes

When it comes to the ideal French girl look, it’s all about elevating even the simplest of outfits with interesting and timeless pieces. Switch out your regular plain t-shirt for this cashmere version that features a relaxed fit and ultra-comfortable wear.

Not only will you be able to achieve that laidback elegant feel, but you’ll also add some subtle, interesting texture to create a complete look.

Layer your tee with a button knit cardigan – its straight design and fine knit fabric continue to offer the same understated qualities as the shirt, while its v-neck detail contrasts beautifully against it.

These super high-waisted jeans are all about the right fit. Their design, meant to accentuate your waist and hug your figure in all the right places, complements the look perfectly by continuing to reinforce a timeless silhouette and easygoing mood.

For shoes, these ballerina flats are just what we needed. With a rounded toe design and a fastening strap, this choice ties our outfit together with cohesion, style, and that idyllic French charm.

5. dress + stockings + turtleneck + pump

french girl outfits

dress | stockings | turtleneck | shoes

One thing is for sure – a great little black dress is a necessity no matter where we are around the world.

For our French-inspired version, we’ve selected a dress that embodies many of the principles that define this style category. From a seemingly simple design to a flattering fit and chic accessories, we’ve got it all covered just for you.

This lined LBD features a low-cut v-neck, button detailing on the front, and both shaping seams and mock front pockets. While subtle, these details work not only to give you a great fit but also to make this blazer dress a closet staple.

Pair your gorgeous Parisian dress with a classic black turtleneck for warmth and additional style points without compromising on the fit.

To round it all out, complete the look with a pair of black stockings and slingback pumps for a classic touch.

6. faux leather jacket + cashmere sweater + jeans + boots

french girl outfits

jacket | sweater | pants | shoes | bag

We bet this cool French girl outfit is just about to win a place in your closet for good. Super versatile, adaptable, and, of course, composed only of the best staples, this casual look takes another “basic” pairing to the next level.

To begin, throw on a simple black cashmere crewneck for a comfortable and fool-proof first layer.

Pair your sweater with these slightly cropped blue jeans. Perfect for showing off your shoes, these pants feature a slight flare leg that brings an interesting shape to your look while still being subtle and flattering.

Throw on this faux leather jacket over the top for a complete look. This luxurious piece brings in two timeless textures within a neutral color palette, working to reinforce the premium quality of the entire look with its materials and ideal fit.

These gorgeous leather booties also get their moment in this outfit, matching the tone of the jacket and bringing its own special flair with a square toe and an elegant, skinnier “block” heel.

7. white shirt + flare pants + Mary Janes + shoulder bag

french girl outfits

shirt | pants | shoes | bag

Whether you’re going for a casual lunch with your girlfriends or attending an end-of-year dinner party, this look is one you can rely on.

Composed of – yet again – high-quality pieces, simple designs, and intentional details, this outfit continues to show just how simple the principles of French style really are, and how they hold up no matter what type of event you are dressing for!

Here, begin your outfit with these black flare pants that feature a simple fit that tapers out slightly at the bottom. Designed to flatter and lengthen your legs, this cropped piece also allows you to create balance with the other elements in your outfits by making room for details to shine.

On top, this white shirt leans on the romantic, balancing the simple silhouette of the pants. Along with its timeless design, ruffle detailing makes this shirt a perfect choice for a French-inspired outfit.

While often following the same understated feel of the Parisian style, these subtle feminine details such as ruffles or lace certainly have a very special place in the realm of French fashion. When used subtly and with intention, these pieces are able to truly shine and claim their place within this coveted aesthetic.

For shoes, these Mary Jane heels pair beautifully with the delicate features of the shirt. Finish off the outfit with this stunning short-handle shoulder bag for a touch of gold and cohesion.

8. blazer + tee + jeans + leather flats + leather hobo bag

french girl outfits

blazer | top | pants | shoes | bag

Much like trench coats, blazers are yet another must-have item when it comes to French girl style. Extremely versatile items, these classic pieces can complement an outfit in hundreds of different ways depending on their size, color, shape, and material.

For the first piece, start the base of your look with this micro-rib crewneck tee. This fitted top brings some subtle texture to your look while also making for a very flattering fit.

On the bottom, these medium-wash jeans balance the black in some of our upcoming pieces, while also bringing a new shade to the outfit. High-rise, these straight-leg jeans are specifically designed to “lift and tighten”, ensuring a fit you’ll fall in love with.

Throw on your oversized blazer at the top, using that boyfriend fit to bring all of your pieces together. Rather than relying on bright colors as an accent, using other neutral shades to diversify the color palette is a great way to escape the beiges and blacks without straying from the Parisian look.

Stay on brand with your accessories! This large navy bag is just what you need to keep your outfit interesting yet perfectly classic, while these oh-so-French Mary Jane flats champion some of that European charm without detracting from our main pieces.

9. cashmere sweater + flare pants + loafers + sunglasses + bucket bag

french girl outfits

sweater | pants | shoes | sunglasses | bag

When it comes to patterns, stripes are known to be particularly beloved by the French. More specifically, the Breton stripes – navy stripes on a white background – are what got this pattern its fame in the country, dating back to sailors in the 19th century. Today, the love for this blend of casual and chic has translated to different colors and varieties.

This striped cashmere sweater brings its own rendition of the French stripes, along with a chic mock neck detail that brings even more sophistication to the piece.

Pair your cozy sweater with these fitted flare pants. Made from double-knit fabric, this piece is designed to hug and flatter, featuring a clean waistband and tapering at the bottom. Perfectly balanced, these black pants are also slightly cropped at the bottom.

For shoes, some classic loafers bring in just the right amount of elegance while also working seamlessly with the other more modern items in the composition.

Add the final touches with a pair of cat eye sunglasses and a gorgeous black bucket bag for sophistication throughout.

10. v-neck sweater + satin skirt + square toe mule + shopper bag

french girl outfits

sweater | skirt | shoes | bag

If there is a perfect way to wear satin skirts, the French have it figured out. In keeping with the simple silhouettes we have been seeing, this outfit also works with pieces that contrast in fabric and proportions.

This midi satin skirt gets us started by establishing a flowy base. Pair it with a v-neck gray sweater for some subtle contrast and a layered feel. Tuck the bottom of your sweater slightly into your skirt, adjusting until you reach that effortless and casual fit.

In this outfit, the shoe works alongside the main pieces to contribute an undeniably French feel – these square-toe mules blend a lot of the characteristics from some of the most popular shoes in France, resulting in an elevated chic touch to the outfit.

For an even more complete and chic result, this leather bag makes for the final element for true balance, bringing together the colors of the look and the gold hardware elements included.

11. flare-sleeve top + flare pant + ballet flat + necklace

french girl outfits

top | pants | shoes | necklace

From brunch to work and even dinner, this outfit can be worn for a number of occasions for its simplicity and understated sophistication.

Start off with these organic flare pants that offer a mostly straight feel with slight tapering on the bottom. Not only does this silhouette make for a versatile piece, but it also brings forward a perfect blend of casual and chic for the everyday.

On the top, this pleated flare-sleeve top brings new texture and a delicate touch to this simple combination, while also matching the subtle flare element of the pants on the sleeve.

Continue to work with the cream and black contrast by donning some ultra-classic black ballerina flats as your shoe of choice. Effortless and undeniably chic, this perfect-for-anything choice will have you thanking your future self a hundred times over!

It’s all about the little things. Accessorize with a gold necklace for a delicate touch that can balance out the colors of the look and contribute a dash of visual interest to your ensemble. Just like it is for many of us, simple gold jewelry is another known staple to the French woman’s wardrobe!

12. wool coat + cashmere sweater + jeans + booties

french girl outfits

coat | sweater | pants | shoes

As classy as it gets. We all know how much we depend on long wool coats to stay stylish when the weather gets rough, and it turns out that the French feel the same.

This beautiful wool coat is the perfect piece for this look, falling on top of the outfit with elegance and weight. Both the texture and the quality of this piece elevate this otherwise simple ensemble into an ultra-elegant combination.

First, begin with this cashmere sweater; its timeless texture and material bring immediate comfort and elegance to the look, while straight black jeans balance it out with a slightly more modern, yet also classic, feel.

For shoes, these black booties are the ideal choice for their pointed-toe detail. Not only do they elongate the silhouette, but they also add a special touch by peaking elegantly out of your jeans.

13. jacket + long-sleeve shirt + long satin skirt + flats

french girl outfits

jacket | shirt | skirt | shoes

Merging two very different staples of the classic French wardrobe, this outfit balances both structured and delicate pieces to create a blend of timeless flair.

Start off with this long satin skirt, bringing some color and texture to your ensemble. Both the material and the length of this skirt, along with its simple silhouette, make this piece easy to complement with other timeless components.

On top, pair it with a long-sleeve shirt. This simple and very understated touch allows the shirt to match the delicate nature of the skirt and bring the two base pieces of the outfit together.

Then, throw on this single-breasted blazer, incorporating your structured element to balance out the outfit and bring that touch of French elegance. These beautifully shaped Mary Jane flats reign it all in, showing just enough to bring one final sweep of chic to your look. Voilà! You’re ready to stroll down the streets of Paris and fit right in.

I have to admit – before our trip to Paris this fall, I didn’t know much about Goyard. I may have heard the name once or twice, but I wasn’t familiar with their designs, or their history in the French city. There are so many iconic luxury brands that have come out of France – it’s difficult to get to know them all! However, after seeing Carolyn’s Goyard tote – and just how much it fit for a busy day walking around Paris – I was intrigued. Not only is it a chic piece that is the perfect touch to finish off any look, but it is truly worth its weight (and all that it holds) in gold.

History

goyard in Paris

The story of Goyard bags can be traced back to 1792 when Pierre-François Martin created Maison Martin (Maison means “house” in French) – specializing in box-making, trunk-making, and packing.

It turns out he was ahead of time when it came to skilled artisans – the 19th century would bring a boom in demand for these types of products. And Maison Martin had something special, honing his craft on the delicate art of garment folding and packing.

Fast forward to 1853, when talented apprentice François Goyard took over the business and renamed it “Maison Goyard.” And if you’re wondering about how the iconic Goyard bag print (or canvas) came about, that’s thanks to Francois’ son, Edmond Goyard – also known by the brand as “Edmond Goyard the Innovator.”

When he took over in 1885, he took Goyard international by creating the first ads for the brand, participating in World Expos, and opening branches and trade offices around the world.

However, it wasn’t until 1892 that Edmond created the iconic Goyardine canvas pattern that references the log drives conducted by his ancestors in the shape of a Y – the central letter in the Goyard family name.

The Products

goyard in paris

Goyard has a wide selection of products that you can browse on its online catalogue. Going back to their roots, Goyard still offers luggage and trunks. And if you’re looking for everyday pieces, they have a wide selection of bags, wallets, and other small leather goods, bracelets, and even textiles, like scarves.

Plus, attention to all of my fellow pet parents out there – they also carry pet accessories, so your dog can be the best-dressed pooch on the block.

Whether you’re looking for tote bags or small trunks, Goyard products won’t disappoint when it comes to craftsmanship and timeless designs.

The Totes

goyard in paris

The Goyard Anjou PM and Saint Louis GM Bag are perhaps the most recognizable pieces that the designer produces. This makes sense to me – they’re perfect for taking on a long flight, a weekend trip, or even just a day out and about.

They can fit everything from your laptop to overnight clothes and are a practical choice if you’re looking to invest in a designer bag.

The most iconic Goyard handbag may be their St. Louis tote. The Saint Louis GM bag is made with Goyardine canvas (a special mix of linen and cotton fabric), is extremely light, and is completely reversible.

It also features a removable inside pocket, which you can attach to one of the handles. This style measures 13.3 inches x 7.8 inches x 15.7 inches and comes in a great selection of classic colors.

The Goyard Anjou PM Bag is the little brother to the Saint Louis GM bag (you can also find the Saint Louis a smaller size, called the PM version). It’s slightly smaller in size: 11 inches x 5.9 inches x 18.5 inches.

If you’re looking for an everyday bag, this may be a better choice than its older brother. Goyard lines the bag with the Goyardine and constructs it with a leather exterior.

Where to Shop

If you’re looking to purchase a Goyard piece of your own, you don’t have to go all the way to Paris to get it! There are six Goyard boutiques here in the United States: San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, and New York City.

But of course, there are benefits to visiting one of their Paris locations (besides the excuse to book your flight to France, of course). With the VAT refund and the euro-to-dollar conversion, you could very well end up saving hundreds on your bag.

These are situational as the conversion rate fluctuates, so you might want to do your research prior to your trip. But chances are, you’ll end up saving on your Goyard purchase if you buy on Rue Saint-Honoré rather than Rodeo Drive or Fifth Avenue.

A caution to you however if you’re shopping in Paris – whenever we passed by one of the Goyard boutiques, there always seemed to be a long line outside the store.

goyard in Paris

Consider arriving early, or make sure to slot out plenty of time in your day if you don’t mind waiting in line. Or if you don’t want to spend any part of your trip in line, consider visiting the smaller boutique front located in Printemps, which didn’t appear to be as crowded.

Buying Pre-Owned Goyard Bags

goyard in paris

If you’re not someone who needs to buy new, there are plenty of options out there to purchase verified, authenticated luxury bags. For instance, Fashionphile is a great site to shop for pre-loved designer pieces from a wide variety of brands, including Goyard.

Bags submitted to Fashionphile for resell are verified to be real by two qualified authenticators who specialize in that designer. And if you’re not satisfied with your piece for whatever reason, you can return it for a full refund within the first 15 days. If you look elsewhere when buying used, make sure to do your research – there are plenty of sites out there that are selling counterfeit versions.

There are also a variety of conditions that are available for purchase, so depending on what you’re looking for, you can find a range of price points as well. Buying pre-loved items can be a sustainable, cost-effective way to acquire your dream bag at a fraction of the cost.

Now that You Know Goyard

Brands like Goyard with such a rich history are still around today and are in such high demand because of how they prioritize the quality of their products and the needs of their customers. However, all that to say is that you don’t need to purchase designer to find well-made products for your wardrobe!

Whether you’re shopping online or in person, pay close attention to the materials that are used. If you invest in quality materials, your pieces will last much longer – whether they’re considered “designer” or not.

And if you’re looking to purchase designer, consider purchasing pre-loved pieces for a sustainable, more affordable alternative. It adds to the thrill of the hunt!

When searching for the most popular handbag in Paris, we had our work cut out for us. There was a wide variety of styles and brands, both from French handbag designers and others, but they all had a few things in common – they were functional, beautiful, and well-crafted.

Although we didn’t conclude that one particular handbag was more popular than all the rest, certain luxury brands and tote bags did stand out after seeing them worn by multiple French women (and men). Read on for a list of the 27 best handbag styles and brands that we spotted in France to bring a final touch of timeless elegance to your looks.

Luxury Handbags

Most popular handbag in Paris - luxury edition.

1. Polène Béri

Polène was by far one of the most popular designer stores in Paris. No matter when we walked by one of their Paris locations, there was a line out the door to enter the store.

A little bit about Polène’s history – it’s a relatively new designer brand, having only been formed in 2016 in France by three siblings. The leather bags are designed in their Paris studio, with leather sourced exclusively from Spanish and Italian-certified tanneries. Their designs are known for creative folds, draping, and organic shapes.

The Béri design is one of Polène’s most recognizable. It features a beautifully unique shape with soft edges and supple leather. The craftsmanship is thoughtful and features a magnetic clasp and gold hardware. Plus, it’s versatile – it can be used as a handbag, shoulder bag with a shoulder strap, or crossbody.

2. Sézane Claude

Saddlebags like Sézane’s “Claude” were one of the most popular styles that we saw worn by women across Paris. Saddlebags are recognizable by their half-moon shape, the simple design featuring a fold-over flap, hardware typically in the center of the bag, and a shoulder strap.

Their name is also reminiscent of their original use – worn on horseback, bike, etc. Fashion meets function in this versatile, timeless bag that is just as useful as it is beautiful.

Sézane crafts their “Claude” handbag in their Italian workshop with crocodile-embossed leather. The French brand offers the bag in six stunning colors, whether you prefer a neutral style or something brighter. We stopped in one of Sézane’s boutiques in Paris, and I have to say, these bags are even more beautiful in person! Plus, they can hold more you think – and who doesn’t want that in a purse?

3. Goyard Anjou PM Bag

Goyard is another well-known French luxury brand with a long, storied history. In fact, the story of Goyard bags goes all the way back to 1792, when Pierre-François Martin created Maison Martin (Maison means “house” in French) – specializing in box-making, trunk-making, and packing.

And it turns out he was ahead of time when it came to skilled artisans – the 19th century would bring a boom in demand for these types of products. And Maison Martin had something special, honing his craft on the delicate art of garment folding and packing.

Fast forward to 1853, when talented apprentice François Goyard took over the business and renamed it “Maison Goyard.” And if you’re wondering about how the iconic Goyard bag print (or canvas) came about, that’s thanks to Francois’ son, Edmond. When he took over in 1892, he created the pattern that references the log drives conducted by his ancestors in the shape of a Y – the central letter in the Goyard family name.

People around the world commend Goyard as one of the best French handbag brands. Plus, every Goyard boutique we passed had quite a long line – meaning that their popularity is definitely not waning! And with good reason – the Goyard Anjou PM Bag features quality leather, and strong handles so that you don’t have to worry about packing the tote with everything you need for the day. Plus, it’s reversible, giving you twice the looks for your investment.

4. Sézane Milo Classic Bag

Structured box-style bags are also another favorite of Parisian women. This style is a great choice to keep your purse organized – it’s often easier to keep your things neat inside of it, rather than rummaging around a less-structured bag in which things often shift around and end up on top of each other. The structured look also lends itself well to more formal occasions, in addition to everyday wear.

The Milo has a shoulder strap for crossbody wear, making it very wearable for doing a lot of walking through the city. It features a leather exterior, cotton lining inside, and a zipped pocket and patch pocket on the interior. Plus, the brass hardware offers an elegant shine to the simple design.

5. Saint Laurent Grain de Poudre Wallet

Speaking of other Parisian-originated French luxury brands, Saint Laurent is another one of those household names with a long history in the city. Saint Laurent (sometimes known as YSL and previously known as Yves Saint Laurent) is a French luxury fashion house. Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé founded the French brand in 1962.

If you like to keep things light (literally!), this wallet-style bag is the perfect solution. Wear it as a clutch, or with the chain over your shoulder. The luxury handbag has built-in spaces for your credit cards, change, and cash, with a separate pocket meant for your other essentials like your sunglasses, phone, or keys. This style also comes in various colors and features the well-known YSL logo on the front in gold hardware.

6. Chanel Lambskin Quilted Bag

When you think of French handbags, a Chanel is probably one of the first to come to mind! In 1910, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her hat shop, Chanel Modes, at 21 rue Cambon. Over 100 years later, one of Chanel’s most famous boutiques stands just down the street at 31 rue Cambon.

Because the French luxury brand is nearly synonymous with the City of Lights, it’s no surprise that we spotted plenty of Chanel bags being worn. One of the most popular styles is the quilted pattern on the Chanel Lambskin model. It features the classic design in quality leather, with the addition of the double c’s in gold hardware – standing for Coco Chanel, of course. Even if this bag is more than you would like to spend on one piece, keep reading for similar styles that you may love just as much.

7. Celine Triomphe

The Celine Triomphe is one of my personal favorites that we spotted in Paris – in addition to other classic Celine designs, like their well-known belt. It may surprise you to learn that the brand originated in 1945 as a children’s custom shoemaker. The brand originated in Paris in 1945, begun by Céline Vipiana and her husband.

This is another version of the popular box-style bag. It features an adjustable shoulder strap, so you can wear it crossbody or on one shoulder. And of course, the highlight of the bag may be the beautiful gold triomphe clasp hardware. This bag is great for organization as well, as it features more pockets than most in this style – three inner compartments, one inner zipped pocket, and one inner flat pocket.

8. Hermès Kelly Bag

Hermès is most likely near the top of the price tier for French purses. The French fashion designer is one of the most recognizable names in the fashion industry for their coveted bags: the Birkin bag. Hermès has had a presence in Paris since 1837, when the harness-maker Thierry Hermès opened a workshop in rue Basse-du-Rempart. Now, six generations later, the brand is synonymous with luxury bags.

In 1930, Hermès first designed the bag pictured below. However, it wasn’t until 1956 that it was renamed the “Kelly” bag, named for the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, after she was photographed carrying it. Since then, the Kelly has been a staple in the world of iconic handbags. With its luxurious leather design, and classic top handle and hardware, this is a designer handbag that many dream about.

Looking for an alternative that is similar in design, but under $50? Here’s one from Amazon.

9. Kate Spade Katy

Color-blocked bags were also a common sight to see in Parisian street style. Parisians aren’t afraid to incorporate color into their wardrobe, and an accessory like a purse, scarf, or socks is an easy way to do that.

If you tend to lean toward more neutral bags, the Kate Spade Katy in cream and leather could be the perfect solution. There’s still the same visual interest with the contrast of the cream leather against the brown, but while maintaining a neutral appearance. This is the perfect bag to pair with a capsule wardrobe.
