Socks with loafers. Is this an unthinkable fashion mistake? A fashion faux pas? In my humble opinion, you can definitely wear socks with loafers. This has many stylish and practical benefits! Not only is this an opportunity to complement your look or add some style, but adding socks to your loafers allows you to extend the shelf life of your shoes in the cooler months, maximizing your wardrobe.
But, it has to look intentional, tasteful, and stylish. This means you need to pick the right pair of socks. In this post, we’ll dive into the right socks to wear with loafers for women that will give you a stylish and timeless look!
As previously mentioned, when wearing socks with loafers, you want it to look intentional. Though this isn’t a hard style to pull off, you don’t want to just pull out your ol’ regular socks. This outfit idea requires more than just simple ankle socks, but don’t worry, it’s not too complicated!
First things first. The socks must be fully visible or not visible at all. No awkward in-between here. We don’t want something that makes people second guess if you did it on purpose or not. Not exactly the type of look we are going for!
Loafers are similar to boat shoes and if you love the preppy style and frequently find yourself wearing boat shoes, then you want no-show socks.
Also, if it’s spring or summer and you’re donning a pair of loafers, then you are probably going to want bare ankles and you may prefer the sockless look. In these instances, it’s okay to go the “visible not at all” look.
For women, we have a lot of options when it comes to what socks to wear with loafers! Are you going for a preppy chic look? Choose white ribbed socks to wear with penny loafers, bare legs, an oxford shirt, and a plaid skirt.
If you’re wearing a skirt or shorts with your loafers and socks, feel free to bunch them at the ankle a little bit for a carefree, stylish look.
For a casual look, wear your socks and loafers with cropped flared jeans and a simple top, like a basic top or sweater.
For a chic look or formal occasions, pair tassel loafers with a white shirt, blazer, and dress pants.
Do you want a timeless look? Then take inspiration from my outfit pictured in this post, and choose neutral socks worn with a pair of jeans and blazer.
For a winter-friendly version of this socks and loafers duo, pair plaid pants with ribbed socks and a sweater. If you want to look classic, finish off the look with a camel coat. If you want to look more stylish, finish off the look with a standout coat!
You can take inspiration from Gala González’s best outfits (a famous Spanish street style muse) and use the socks as an opportunity to add a pop of color.
But whether you go with white, brown, or black socks, you can’t go wrong.
If you’re looking for the type of socks that complement your timeless outfit, then take a look at these best socks when it comes to looking classic and stylish:
If you want to use this opportunity to add some boldness and you’re after a cool look, then some of the coolest sock options could be floral prints, red socks, or a cool black mesh sock.
I’m a fan of tights with loafers, too. But if you don’t want to don a pair of tights, then a sheer pair of dress socks can substitute. My personal opinion is that if you wear tall sheer socks with bare legs, it looks like you’re wearing a pair of airplane compression socks. So this look of sheer socks is best done with a pair of bottoms that will cover the top of the socks!
When looking to try this styling tip out, you may be wondering what loafer shoe style you need for this. You have a lot of options. Pick whatever pair of loafers you love and that you can find yourself wearing over and over again, whether that be:
Penny loafers
Mule loafers
Heeled loafers
Tassel loafers
Pointed toe loafers
Then there are different colors and prints for you to choose from, whether that be a fresh white or leopard print.
My favorite type of loafer is a penny loafer. I find this type of shoe to be the most versatile and looks just as great with socks as they do without. Classic black loafers or another neutral, like brown are always a good idea. If you can swing it, get a true leather loafer as these will hold up the best and look even better with time!
Gucci loafers are supposedly some of the best loafers out there and worth the investment, but you can still find high-quality (and more affordable) loafers from Sam Edelman, Everlane, Italic, and Madewell. And if you’re on a budget, Target and Old Navy have some cute options too.
Whether you like simple leather shoes or bold statement shoes, you can definitely find a style that works for you and your wardrobe!
Even if you’re still on the fence about how to wear socks with loafers, consider getting this classic shoe anyway! It’s a versatile shoe that can work for anything from a casual setting to a work conference.
Loafers are one of the best traditional styles and not only have they been around for a long time, but they’ll never go out of style. They should have a place in your classic wardrobe. For other closet staples, you should have for a classic wardrobe, keep reading!
