Sometimes we wish there was a book that we got when we turned 18 and became a woman. The book would have everything you needed to know about how to navigate the crazy world that is life. Unfortunately, such a book is not the standard-issue – as much as we wish it was! Instead, I put together my own version. This guide has the 10 things every woman should know, from what skincare products they should use to body confidence.

1. Stop Saying ‘Sorry’ Out Of Habit

I believe women should know that being gracious is classy and part of being gracious is apologizing. But one bad habit that most women have in common is that they say “sorry” for absolutely everything! We apologize as though it’s going out of fashion.

When you go to ask someone for something, don’t start off by saying “sorry”. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t apologize when you do something wrong – rather the opposite. Give the word its meaning back and stop apologizing for just existing!

2. Go & See Your Doctor

Call your doctor and book a check-up! We’re all busy women, and it’s natural that some things slip. Staying on top of your health is the most important thing that you can do. Make sure you go for a regular check-up to see your doctor and if you have any concerns, don’t think twice about picking up the phone.

Women by nature suffer in silence or don’t take action when they see a mole getting bigger, for example, because we’re just too busy. If you need to go and see a doctor, don’t put it off! Make sure that you also attend any routine appointments like a pap smear.

3. Your Life is Your Own (Don’t Live for Other’s Approval)

Out of the 10 things every woman should know, this is perhaps the most important. Trying to please everyone gets you nowhere. Well, besides miserable! It’s impossible and ultimately, you decide how to live your life.

Seeking wise counsel for certain circumstances is a good idea, but the worst thing you could do is take to the internet to ask strangers for advice or live a life trying to impress people on Instagram. You’ve only got one life, after all. Don’t waste it!

4. Invest in Skincare Products

One practical thing that you can do is to invest in your skincare. “Invest” can just mean time and effort too. It doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy, but you want to have at least four basic products: cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer. The Ordinary is an affordable yet effective place to start. CeraVe & Cetaphil are gentle, affordable, and highly recommended too.

Ideally, you should follow a consistent skincare routine morning and night. Never go to sleep with your makeup on either! Perfecting your skincare routine will also help improve your makeup. And as time and budget allow, you could look into visiting a dermatologist or esthetician to make sure your skin is in tip-top shape.

5. It’s Okay to Say No

While it’s a good idea to stop saying sorry out of habit, I want you to start saying no too. If you’re busy and don’t have the bandwidth to help, politely say no. If a guy won’t stop hitting on you at the bar and keeps asking for your number, firmly say no. Don’t be ashamed to say no. It shows that you have strong willpower and have self-respect for boundaries, mental health, life, and time.

By saying no to things that are a bad fit, it leaves you with the capacity to yes to things that are, and it allows you to give it your all to the friends and family that truly matter to you.

6. Your Style Is Your Own

While I focus on classic, timeless, and chic fashion on this blog, I understand that neutrals and blazers aren’t for everyone. So another important life lesson on this list of 10 things every woman should know is that your style is your own. Wear what you want and not what society tells you is in fashion. Shop at the budget-friendly store if designer is not in your budget, and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it. If you are thinking about coloring your hair pink, do it!

In fact, maybe I should just sum up one of the most important things a woman should know to this: Trying to live a life that pleases other people will just leave you miserable! Most of us have the “joy” of growing up on social media. It has its pros, for sure, but we have to be extra careful not to live a life in constant comparison.

7. Tomorrow Is Another Day

Everyone has bad days, just don’t stay there mentally! Whatever might have happened today, you always have tomorrow just around the corner. To quote Scarlett O’Hara, “Tomorrow is Another Day”. If today didn’t go as plan, there is always tomorrow to try again. Each day represents a fresh start for you to make a change in your life. Write a to-do list for the next day to help you stay on track while jotting down what you’re grateful for.

Practicing gratitude and thankfulness are some of the easiest ways to feel better. Not only that, but continual thankfulness leads to joy- which is way more lasting than “just” happiness. But ultimately, true and lasting joy is found in being a child of God. Having faith in Jesus gives purpose to life, even on the bad days.

8. Trust Me, Drink Your Water

Put down the coffee and pick up your water! You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day as a woman. Not only does this keep your skin hydrated, but it’s also essential to look after your body. If you struggle to hit your daily water intake, carry a water bottle around with you. This one keeps track of how much to drink at what times.

Drinking the recommended intake of water can help with weight loss as it can curb hunger and keep you in your calorie deficit. Weight loss aside, drinking enough water flushes out toxins and generally keeps you healthy. While you’re at it, go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood too. You can’t live your best life if you’re not in your best health!

9. Fad Diets Will Get You Nowhere

Speaking of weight loss, avoid fad diets. Anything that promises to be a quick solution to shed a few pounds will rarely work in the long term. Yes, you might lose a bit of weight, but you’re likely to put it straight back on again. You’re also more likely to put weight on than lose any while on a fad diet. If you want to lose weight, you need to make sustainable changes to your lifestyle and daily routine.

Start by figuring out what your daily calorie deficit should be. Being in a calorie deficit is the only way that you lose weight, and you can do it without going hungry or skipping on dessert. Everybody has body insecurities but it’s not worth living in them. The best thing you can do is focus on healthy, not skinny!

10. Dream Big

The last of our 10 things every woman should know is to dream big. If the pandemic has shown us anything, it’s that life is too short to have regrets. If you can dream it, there’s a way to make it a reality. Set monthly and yearly goals and strive to achieve them. Build a vision board and put everything you want on it. Don’t let anyone tell you that your dreams are unachievable or that no one has ever done something like it before. Someone has to be the first of everything!

Don’t think that your dream has to be career orientated either. There’s no one size fits all! Maybe it’s your dream to hit a healthy weight, learn a new skill, write a book, start a side hustle, or build a home. Whatever your dreams are, go out and get them!
