European kitchen designs are known for their sophistication and timeless appeal. Like with any design style, there are always interpretations and personalizations that can be done along the building or renovation process that will make your house feel that much more like home – and feel that much more like you. When it came time to pick the style of our home, and, of course, our dream kitchen aesthetic, we knew that we wanted charming, functional, and inviting spaces overall.

The beauty of European style is not just in the beauty that we can see (though inviting yet chic decor pieces make for a great combo) but in the versatility, allowing you to infuse your unique taste while still retaining the essence of European charm that you fell in love with in the first place. Come with me as we go through some of my favorite elements of our new European-inspired kitchen and I’ll let you in on how we got here!

My Kitchen Reveal: European Kitchen Design

Kitchen Layout & Foundation

european custom timeless kitchen designs

Here she is!

First things first. To lay the foundation and overall design of our perfect kitchen, we called in Providence House Design. Kitchen design is beyond our DIY capabilities and I know how important it is to start with a good foundation – and one you really love! Then you can integrate your own tweaks and custom details along the way.

For us, it was really important to create a space that resonated with our lifestyle. Though most authentic European kitchens use a dining table in lieu of an island, a kitchen island and bar stools are important features for us, and at the end of the day, your kitchen should work for your lifestyle first. (Even if it does make you look like you’re from the United States!)

Achieving a European space is more about following design principles and less about following an exact blueprint. After all, there are so many decisions to make in a kitchen, from finding the best placement for cabinets to thinking about traffic flow, and you don’t want to feel confined to a certain way of designing that may not be conducive to how you realistically live.

Overall, European design tends to blend the features of functional kitchens with style for the ideal space – and you get to decide how that looks for yourself!

Thanks to a designer, we were able to find a layout and see a rendering that worked for us both aesthetically and in real life, and having a plan really allowed us to properly see the vision of what was possible. So we got to work!

European Kitchen Cabinets

Armed with our kitchen rendering, we took it to our cabinet designer and asked them to turn the picture into plans to start the most important (and expensive) part of the kitchen.

Anybody who has dealt with a kitchen remodel or build will understand – custom cabinetry and cabinets in general can easily be the most expensive part of a new kitchen. From getting the actual cabinets to having them assembled or installed, you’ll see a significant dent in your budget after accounting for this part.

Keeping expense in mind and how we never ever wanted to change our cabinets, for our kitchen, we wanted our take on European cabinets to check a few boxes when it came to narrowing down our options. Design trends can be great if you are looking for something more current, but we opted for timeless and classic when it came to looks, as well as durability.

After considering a bunch of different possibilities, we settled on inset white oak kitchen cabinets with molding. Though I was torn between painted cabinets and stained cabinets for a long time, at the end of the day, stained wood was the right material for us for a few reasons.

We’re located in a wooded location, so it just made sense to integrate this aspect into our home in a way that felt fitting, not overwhelming, and truly timeless. This classic wood look fit in perfectly both into our environment and with the design of our kitchen, which was beyond ideal for us.

Perhaps most importantly, I didn’t want to have to worry about paint chipping or peeling in the future; since we definitely don’t anticipate getting tired of this stunning material, wood was the perfect choice for our European-style kitchen cabinets.

We got our RTA cabinets through Cabinet Joint. In order to save some money, we decided to assemble and install the cabinets ourselves. I definitely don’t want to downplay how much work this took, but it was completely worth it! Our European cabinets look great and exactly the way we pictured it, too, on top of giving us plenty of storage space in the kitchen. (We have soft close drawers too!)

Ultimately, I’m glad we went this route because it made the high-end look (complete with panels for our appliances) achievable, and allowed us to do fun extra details, like a cubby for cookbooks and glass front cabinets by the stove to display dishes and serving bowls.

Vintage Lanterns

A design element that we definitely felt strongly about integrating into our kitchen was two beautiful vintage (inspired) lanterns on top of our island. In a world of modern and sleek, I wanted to kick it “old school”.

These (very oversized) charming fixtures not only illuminate the space and bring that much-sought European flair, but they also set a warm and inviting tone overall. A soft sage green color with gold detailing, these lights create exactly the type of atmosphere we want for the heart of the home. (They match our living room color scheme too!)

Charming, homey, and bringing that much-wanted European flair, these oversized lanterns work to blend our desired look with a space that feels functional for our family. Casting a softer warm glow over the island, these lights turn our kitchen into a cozy, super inviting space we all want to be in.

After all, everybody knows where home gatherings and parties always end up. Naturally, the kitchen of a home is where most people tend to naturally gravitate towards, and we wanted to make sure that our kitchen looked and felt exactly the way we intended it to.

Small touches and intentional details that may feel insignificant during the process were the touches that really transformed the kitchen into a place for shared moments and connection for us.

Brass Details

Brass hardware is another trademark touch in European kitchens, and we definitely wanted to find a way of integrating it into our space.

Something I loved about integrating European design into our kitchen was the way that everyday elements that we might not think too hard about ended up being some of the details we love most!

While brass hardware is absolutely beautiful, it served an even bigger purpose in the grand scheme of our kitchen plans: adding touches of warmth and sophistication to the room.

Once I decided on the unlacquered brass hardware from Pepe & Carols, I went all in and matched it to the faucets, sconces, vent cover, and even the outlet covers.

Farmhouse Sink

Gaining more widespread popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries (and consequently becoming a staple!), farmhouse sinks were known for their multifunctional appeal. Being able to be used for a variety of purposes, a deep basin was an absolute must-have when it came to functional European kitchens in the past. Today, farmhouse sinks are still very much in demand around the world, wanted for their classic charm and, of course, practical aspects too!

As far as placement, personally, a sink in the island is not my first choice. Placing our sink by the window gave our kitchen the best flow design-wise, and also allows for whoever is doing the dishes to admire the beautiful view outside – what could be better than that?

Sconces and Window Shelf

Anybody who has been designing or renovating a house knows just how important lighting can be in making a space feel welcoming and comfortable to be in. While the lanterns above our island are incredible, we also wanted smaller touches of light that work to make for a soft and serene space whenever we want. Our designer dreamt up this idea of sconces on cabinets and I instantly loved it as it was very multipurpose.

As with any element we were looking to bring into our kitchen, we wanted to make sure that the sconces worked on two levels like everything else – aesthetically and practically. By adding sconces to the cabinet by the window, we were able to achieve that charming, intentional European look while also making the space that much cozier as well!

While bigger elements in the kitchen stand out on their own, more subtle choices also play a big role in the big-picture aspect of this room. In particular, I wanted to mention the window shelf, another idea from our designer!

When it came to incorporating this European design style throughout our kitchen, I wanted to make sure that small touches and details were spread out throughout the whole space, making this room feel really cohesive and intentional as a whole.

Putting a shelf in front of the window and above the sink helped achieve that look while also adding yet another practical detail.

The window (that still opens!) stays visually unobstructed, meaning the shelf doesn’t affect the amount of natural light we get in the kitchen and it doesn’t block the view. (Because who wants to stare at a shelf?)

On top of that, the shelf makes it easier to clear and clean the counter for optimal daily use. It’s all in the small touches – the gorgeous detailing on the shelf is made from the same material and stain as the cabinets, making it a fun little detail of its own and not just a functional addition that takes away from the design.

Arched Stove Niche

The arched stove niche gave us an opportunity to infuse our space with an extra dose of European style when it came down to it. Matching our arched doorway to the right, this niche gave this section of our kitchen a very intentional and beautiful effect. It’s thee statement of the kitchen!

Beyond aesthetics, this section is perfect for hiding easy-access spice shelves that make our lives a lot more efficient, but still clutter-free, by making great use of our space.

For the look I wanted, I painted this stove niche in plaster paint.

Pot Filler

polished brass kingston brass pot filler

If you have gone through the process of designing, building, and finishing a kitchen, you know how long and frustrating it can be along the way. Having to go through all of the chaotic steps of the home building process just meant that we wanted to make sure to include all of the details from the start that we had been dreaming about when picturing our home.

If you can relate, of course, you’ll also know that there are some limitations to this too! While we did inevitably have to pick and choose when it came to certain aspects and details of our home (that’s a whole ‘nother post – or three), a pot filler was definitely a practical luxury we were excited to integrate into our kitchen.

Beyond making for a practical piece (who doesn’t love the fun touch of cooking with a beautiful pot filler?) this special element also added some much-welcome visual interest to the area above our stove.

When looking at different kitchens for inspiration, practical elements that end up also serving as visual standouts can make for some of the best moments in a space, and the pot filler can definitely fit within this category!

I went with the Kingston Brass pot filler as it had a matching bridge faucet that sits on top of our farmhouse sink.

Quartz Countertops, Tile Backsplash, and Slab Backsplash

As well-designed and beautiful as they can be, European kitchens are known for their efficient use of space and great functionality. While this can be seen reflected in many aspects of the kitchen space, it is also definitely true when it comes to countertops!

Quality ranks super high as one of the most important elements of European kitchens, and this is often seen through the chosen materials for any specific design. When it came to our kitchen, we knew we wanted durable, quality countertops that would last us years while still keeping their aesthetic quality as well.

Popular countertop choices in European kitchens include marble, granite, wood, and quartz. While marble may be a popular pick for timeless European kitchens and granite might be considered the go-to choice by some Americans, quartz offers amazing quality and an appearance that won’t take on a patina (if that’s your concern with marble), and instead, it maintains its current look for years and years to come.

I’ll admit, I struggled between the question of marble or quartz? for a while, and if you love to browse different homes and kitchens, then you know that it can be hard to settle on a countertop when you see one great option after the other! After carefully considering a few different versions of our preferred look, white quartz with subtle veining seemed to be the right choice in a few different ways.

Our decision to go with white quartz sourced locally not only gave us a great surface to work on functionally, but it also helped us to open up the room and infuse it with a slightly more modern touch. I also knew I wanted a ceramic tile backsplash with a slight sheen, and this flowed effortlessly.

Matching the white walls of our kitchen, this choice brought a lot more light to the space, balancing the darker tones of the wood and bringing real balance.

Recommended by our designer, we opted to carry the countertop onto the wall behind our oven for one smooth transition and I’m glad we did, as this slab makes cleaning up grease and spaghetti sauce splatters a whole lot easier!

Appliances

Last but definitely not least: appliances. In the world of European kitchens, choosing the right appliances is a very important step in the process, helping us to create a space that is just as functional and efficient as it is beautiful and inviting.

For us, appliances like the panel-ready Bosch dishwasher and a panel-ready Fisher & Paykel fridge were perfect for allowing a seamless integration into our kitchen, reinforcing the design aesthetic we wanted (especially in an open floor plan) while also streamlining this room to be totally functional throughout our days.

Leaning into the European style, we chose an Italian range. Our Ilve 36″ oven range in antique white acts in a similar way, making for a beautiful addition to the kitchen that is equal parts functional and an aesthetic standout in the space. We swapped out the silver legs with these antique claw feet and it takes it to the next level.

Achieving European Kitchen Designs

While we were definitely keeping design at the top of our minds, our biggest goal was making our beautiful kitchen feel like the heart of our home with an inviting atmosphere. Mission accomplished!

In European design, all the elements of a particular space tend to work together to merge functionality and aesthetic appeal, resulting in a refined yet very approachable space that pays close attention to details with touches of timeless elegance.

If you want to steer away from the modern-leaning finishes we see today, this design style prioritizes both the functionality and the aesthetic aspects of the space, resulting in both kitchen and interiors that exude a refined yet approachable ambiance, with careful attention to detail and a commitment to classic beauty at the same time.

Does that sound like something you want? One way to achieve that is by finding the right color scheme for your new kitchen design; starting with the right paint color can totally set the tone for your project! Parisian apartments seem to embody the best of both worlds when it comes to balancing design elements. The most inspirational photos (and real-life examples) of Parisian apartment/French apartment style I’ve seen have the perfect blend of antique and modern, elegant and cozy, unique and traditional elements.

Of course, there are plenty of different styles that are found within Parisian apartment aesthetics. Whether that be the grandeur of Versailles or a more contemporary style, there are plenty of ideas to be found that can be incorporated into your own home to bring a little bit of French apartment living to you, no matter where you live. Read on for some inspiration to help you bring the charm and elegance of a Parisian apartment into your own space!

1. Versailles Inspired Decor

When it comes to the different subsets of Parisian-inspired decor that you can find inspiration from, if you prefer an elegant, traditional style, then you’ll probably like elements on this Versailles-inspired mood board.

To achieve this look, you’ll want to curate a collection of ornate, classical pieces. In this case, searching for treasures in your local antique shops will be a great place to start.

Furniture

Gilded, ornate furniture comes to mind first when I think of Versailles-inspired design. This gold mirror will shine in any room, whether it’s utilized over a fireplace mantel, on a dresser, or in a sitting room. A large mirror such as this is also a strategic design choice, as mirrors help reflect the light in smaller rooms to make them appear larger.

Light fixtures are also a great way to bring the Versailles-inspired look into your home. Crystal chandeliers and moody candles offer soft, elegant lighting to any room, whether that be your bedroom, living room, or dining space. And if you have great natural light in your space, even better! Large windows and high ceilings are another marker of the palatial architectural style.

Although not every home will come with working, built-in marble fireplaces, luckily there are alternatives out there at an affordable price to achieve a similar look in your living space. For example, standalone fireplace mantels are widely available (even on Amazon, like the one below) and come in all shapes, sizes, and finishes.

Walls

When it comes to wall coverings, don’t be afraid of wallpaper to achieve the Versailles-inspired look. And if wallpaper isn’t your style, bold but soft colors will help to contribute to a similar atmosphere. Also, don’t forget details such as crown molding, chair rails, and ceiling medallions. These may seem small in the grand scheme of things, but they’ll go far when it comes to adding an ornate, maximalist look to your room.

Floors

If you’re analyzing real photos of the Palace of Versailles, you’ll notice that parquet flooring is particularly popular (I’ll touch on this in the next section). However, marble would also make for a great choice depending on the room you’re decorating. It offers the same sort of grandeur and might be more fitting than parquet when it comes to an area such as the kitchen or a bathroom.

2. Parisian Modern Decor

The modern Parisian apartment/French apartment style offers a beautiful balance of organic and inorganic elements, cold and warmth. When it comes to colors, this aesthetic tends to favor a clean base, such as white walls, and wooden floors. French style comes through in the layering of furniture, decor, and other details – from marble bookends and tables to gold frames and wall sconces.

Furniture

Paris apartments are full of a variety of fabrics and styles when it comes to furniture. Furniture sets are not typically found in French style, and you’ll often find pieces that complement rather than exactly match each other.

A statement couch is a popular choice to draw attention to a focal point in the living room of a French apartment. For instance, this green couch in a luxe fabric with wooden legs is a great example of a timeless piece that also acts as an anchor in your design.

As you look at the rest of your space, mixing textures is the perfect way to balance old and new, modern and traditional. An ornate, gold frame is the perfect way to balance the look of a sleek marble side table. Iron bookends, meanwhile, complement the look of soft white drapes, and a wooden coffee table.

Floors

Parquet floors are a staple in French homes. Parquet flooring is a type of wood flooring featuring distinctive, repetitive patterns. Historically this type of flooring was made by assembling it piece by piece, but now, most parquet floors come in tile form. From herringbone patterns to checkerboard to chevron, there’s a wide variety of styles to fit all kinds of tastes.

Besides wood, you might also consider flooring elements made of tile, or stone. These offer a balance to soft fabrics and furniture that you might use to decorate your space.

3. French Country Decor

French country style is the most “lived-in” style of the three subsets of French style. Markers of the French interiors include rustic comfort, soft patterns and hues, and unique, vintage accents. The traditional style balances decor items from a flea market with elevated pieces like crystal chandeliers or a quality coffee table.

Flooring

Warm, organic wood tones are the perfect way to set the foundation of your French country space. Whether you prefer a more traditional style of hardwood flooring or if you like the look of parquet floors, wood tones will help to balance out the other elements of this design.

And if you already have hardwood floors that are a little worn, don’t worry! The worn wood look is another staple of French country design, so no need to spend your entire budget on new ones, or refinishing them.

Walls

Soft colors are often a staple of French design and Parisian apartment/french apartment style. Whether that be muted blues, greens, or pinks, these colors are often found alongside warm neutrals.

Wallpaper is another popular choice when it comes to Parisian interior design. You’ll notice that even the wall coverings embody a sense of history and tell a story, sometimes in the very pattern or symbols found in the design.

Decor

When you go to decorate with French country design in mind, vintage elements are a great place to start. Antiquing is a fun adventure in and of itself, and you can find great deals on all sorts of finds that otherwise might be very expensive if you were to buy them firsthand.

Some items to keep an eye out for would be ceramic pots and lamps, vintage vases and dishes, and furniture items like wooden side tables, benches, etc. Antique pieces offset the starkness of more modern finds.

Decor is also a great place to bring color to your space. Whether it’s in an ornate rug or in the fresh flowers that fill your vases, a pop of color will instantly add warmth and life to your space.

French country decor is also the perfect design aesthetic in which to bring in heirloom pieces that tell a story and are meaningful to you. Whether you display your mother’s apron or grandparent’s hutch, pieces with a sense of history only add to the Parisian style. They also add an important piece of you to the room!

Furniture

If you’re looking to invest in a furniture piece for your own home with some French flair, look for comfortable pieces that are as beautiful as they are practical. A cozy reading chair will never go out of style, and one in a pattern or print is the perfect way to bring a bit of your personality to the piece. A padded ottoman bench, meanwhile, is the perfect addition to a hallway or entryway to stop at to tie your shoes.

Bring French Style Into Your Own Home

You don’t have to live in a centuries-old building to achieve the look of a chic Parisian apartment. Whether you have a more contemporary style or traditional style, there is inspiration for you found in French interiors.

The lessons that I always take away from the Parisian apartment/French apartment style include: layer and curate your space like you would a gallery wall, search for secondhand treasures, and balance design elements like light and dark, hard and soft. I’ve started to incorporate these lessons into my own home decorating, and I love the results – hopefully, you will, too!

Now that I actually have my own house again to decorate and make a home, my love for antiquing has been reignited! Though the sustainability factor is a big draw to shopping secondhand, I personally love the thrill of the hunt and the chance to find home decor with a little patina that feels special and well-loved. I’m a big believer that these items add character to your home and balance out all the “new” from places like Hobby Lobby, Amazon, or Target (no shame, we all do it). To inspire your own second-hand hunt, here are some of my most recent antique finds and how I styled them in our new home!

1. French Books

antique french books

I’m always on the lookout for cool, old books. Yes, they’re interesting to read (of course), but they’re also such a versatile decor piece. Whether you style them on a bookshelf, coffee table, or console table, they can instantly add a sense of character and history to your home.

I found a bunch of French books at an antique store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for only $5 a piece! A generous amount came home with me that day and currently, I have them on our bookshelf in the sunroom, but I know that I’ll be breaking up the set and moving them around the home too.

2. Arched Black Mirror

arched black mirror entryway

When I first saw this, I couldn’t think of a place to use it in our home, but I instantly fell in love with it. Not getting the item is a regret that can haunt you, so I brought this beauty home anyway. What can I say, I can’t resist a good mirror. (And this one was marked down to $100.)

Though I don’t want to encourage hoarding, we tend to find room for things we believe to be beautiful! I ended up finding the perfect spot for this mirror in our entryway. It fills the blank wall nicely and the arch of the mirror mimics our arched front door and arched entryway niche. The black of the mirror complements the black in the marble flooring. It looks like it was meant to be!

3. Bookcase

bookcase in sunroom dining room

This bookcase set is one of my favorite second-hand furniture finds to date! There was this spot in our sunroom where I really wanted bookcases to create that cozy, library look. We had talked about doing built-ins, but that expense wasn’t a priority.

So we were searching second-hand stores, hoping to find something that could work in the meantime so we could at least unpack all our book boxes and bags. To our pleasant surprise, we found this set of 3 solid wood bookcases for $135.

It needed a new paint job anyway, but also in an effort to have it look like a stand-alone piece because we weren’t going to build it in, I painted it a soft neutral color, Sage Green by Sherwin Williams.

Though the paint job isn’t perfect (there were existing layers of goopy paint underneath that I didn’t really feel like sanding – ha), it suits our needs really, really well and we have no desire or need to even think about built-ins now!

4. Candle Sticks

antique candlesticks

These solid brass candlesticks were an instant buy for me. Just like books, they are so versatile and can be styled in different rooms for different seasons. Whether it’s on the fireplace mantle, bookshelf, or in the window for the holiday season, they add to the cozy ambiance and the brass adds a touch of glamour.

Currently, I have a set on a stack of books, but they definitely made their rounds during the Christmas season. They ranged from $5-$20 apiece.

5. Gold Bowl

antique gold bowl

I thought this simple and affordable gold bowl ($8), would make a great accent piece to my gold/brass touches and prove to be a versatile piece. And it is!

It doesn’t have a set place – we’ll just call it the sisterhood of the traveling bowl. Currently, it’s used in a guest bathroom for toiletries, but it also housed mints and candies for this past holiday season. It’s a practical decor item and those are some of my favorite kinds!

6. Vintage Frames

antique picture frames

Because a large, quality frame is so expensive these days, it feels even better when you can find a beautiful secondhand one – and that’s no easy task. But if you push past the cheesy or cheap ones, you may be rewarded with some beauties. And lucky enough, I was.

6 months into our home, I am still putting on the finishing touches, and all the beautiful picture frames (with Etsy pictures printed at Walgreens) add that special, lived-in touch.

7. Gold Mirrored Tray

antique gold and mirror tray

When I first saw this tray I thought it would be perfect for a makeup vanity. Well, we don’t have a large enough vanity for it in our bathroom, but the next best thing is using it on a bookshelf to hold bathroom essentials such as towels.

8. Floor Candelabra

antique candelabra

When I saw this candelabra at a flea market 8+ months ago, I instantly thought of Christmas. I finally got the chance to bring it out of storage and use it for these past holidays. Lit or unlit, it added such a cozy ambiance to the room.

9. Brass Shelving Brackets

antique brass brackets in pantry

These shelving brackets were another one of those “not sure how I’m going to use it yet, but I don’t want to pass it up” pieces. Little did I know that they’d end up being a feature in our pantry!

For just $15 a pair, these beautiful brackets offer that Parisian bistro feel that I just adore for our pantry.

10. Copper Kettle

antique copper kettle

This copper kettle (less than $10) is the perfect companion for our European-inspired pantry. Hanging from a brass rod, it gives a cozy, rustic touch that complements well with the rest of the room.

11. Gold and Silver Serving Tray

antique home decor

I’ve been obsessed with all things brass and gold lately and I have a hard time passing anything up with those details – especially when the brass is mixed with silver!

This tray is the perfect decor item for pantries and shelves when not in use, but also so handy to get out and use for a party or gathering.

Loving My Antique Finds

I don’t want to go overboard with antique finds (it’s still stuff, after all), but it sure is exciting to find something beautiful – at an agreeable price too, no less. Whether I’m thrifting for clothes or sourcing the next antique for my home, shopping for second-hand items is one of my favorite things to do.

This combination space has become my favorite spot in the house. From the furniture choices to the decor accents, I’ll walk you through our functional yet pretty dining room sunroom combo. So grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable, and let’s dive in!

Conceptualizing the Dining Room Sunroom Combo: The Vision

Not everyone has the space, means, or want for a separate dining room and sunroom – and that’s no problem. Most people these days are trying to find the best way to make a home work for them in the space that they have, and sometimes that means combining rooms.

But combining rooms doesn’t also have to mean “cramped” or that you’ll sacrifice something! A dining room sunroom combo offers a multitude of benefits. First, it provides a versatile space that can be used for various purposes. You can host dinner parties in the dining area, enjoy breakfast in the sunroom, or even use the space as a home office or a cozy reading nook.

The combination of a dining room and a sunroom gives you the best of both worlds – a dedicated dining space and a bright, airy room that allows you to soak up natural light and enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your home, whether you’re enjoying a meal or simply relaxing in the sunroom.

As I conceptualized our dining room sunroom combo, I knew that I wanted it to be a versatile space that could easily transition from a casual dining area to a cozy lounge for relaxation. This meant choosing furniture and decor that was both practical and stylish, while also ensuring that it complemented the overall design of the room.

Choosing the Right Dining Table

sunroom dining room combo

table | chairs (similar) | rug | bowls | pillow | taper candles

When it comes to choosing the perfect dining table for your dining room sunroom combo, size is a crucial factor to consider. You want a table that fits well in the space and allows for comfortable seating but is not so big that you don’t have room for anything else.

But how do you determine the right size?

Lifestyle is the most important thing to consider. How do you actually envision using the space? Do you want a space just for your immediate family? Overflow for big events? Hosting formal dinner parties?

Round or oval tables are great for smaller spaces, as they allow for more flexibility in seating arrangements. Rectangular tables, on the other hand, are better suited for larger areas and can accommodate more guests.

Truthfully, we don’t host a lot of families and couples for dinner (I’m more of a themed party type of planner), so a 6 person table is perfect for our family of 4.

If you do like to host big groups, then an extendable table could be perfect for you as that gives you the freedom of breathing room and of adding more people to the table when you need it.

And as far as layout, place the table in an accessible spot if it’s something that will be used daily. Ours is used once a day for family dinner, so it’s located nearest to the French doors. This ensures we don’t have to zig-zag around any furniture to reach the table.

This area has served as a place for game night and a desk for working too!

Choosing the Perfect Furniture for The Lounge Area

chairs | bench | lamp

Now that we’ve covered the dining part of the room, let’s talk about the furniture that makes up the cozy lounge area in the sunroom. After dinner (or any time of the day really) is the perfect time to relax, read a book, or enjoy a hot beverage while basking in the natural light. When selecting furniture pieces for this area, it’s important to consider both comfort and style.

To create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, I recommend starting with bookcases. Not only do they anchor the room and provide a focal point, but they serve a practical purpose to the reading lounge area and also provide a library study feel to the dining room.

Related: The “Undining” Room: Alternatives to the Dining Room and How To Make the Most Out of Your Space in an Open Concept Home

When it came to the actual furniture, I wanted pieces that were not only stylish and practical but also able to seamlessly transition between a dining area and a cozy lounge. After much deliberation (and trying out different setups), I landed on two swivel chairs and an upholstered ottoman bench with blanket storage to bring this vision to life.

Thanks to the traditional design, these chairs are not only comfortable but also add a touch of refinement to the space. And the best part? They swivel!

Whether you want to have a conversation and face a friend opposite you, face the table and be a part of the dining area, or look out the window and read a book – you can. That’s the beauty of versatile furniture like swivel chairs. The ability to swivel allows you to easily turn and face different directions – perfect for a multipurpose space like this one.

I also included a coffee table/ottoman bench in the reading area. This serves as a convenient spot for drinks and snacks while relaxing, a footrest, blanket storage, or additional seating if needed.

And of course, a lamp is necessary to create the perfect reading nook!

Design Elements

Since we are lucky enough to have the woods in our backyard, I knew I wanted a natural, woodsy theme to complement my existing French Country style.

The walls have been painted a soft, creamy white and the taupe trim adds contrast and brings the woodsy outdoors in. I chose sage green as an accent color throughout the house because it’s calming and reminiscent of nature.

Greenery is strategically placed throughout the space, bringing a sense of freshness and life.

No matter the size of your room, cozy can be created wherever you are. Here’s to creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing!

Are you tired of spending a fortune on home renovations? We were too. That’s why when it came to our kitchen pantry, we decided to take matters into our own hands and do it ourselves. Not only did we save a whopping $15,000+, but we also got to have a better-working pantry in a weekend and add a custom style. In this post, I’ll share our journey of how we completed our kitchen pantry. Warning: You may be inspired to tackle your own kitchen pantry DIY project too!

The Motivation Behind Our Kitchen Pantry DIY

We are lucky enough that we got to move into a new home, and we didn’t just have a new pantry, but a walk-in pantry too.

But towards the end of our build, we were completely over spending money, and with all the other things to prioritize and focus on, the pantry became a total mess and eyesore.

pantry before makeover

We had already worked with a cabinet designer and came up with a plan – and our cabinet design clocked in at around $13,000.

Even if we wanted to prioritize the pantry, it was going to take months to get the cabinets, thanks to lead times and the supply chain. And since these cabinets were RTA, we would have had to set aside the time to put them together ourselves or hire them out, increasing the cost. It was all feeling very overwhelming.

So esentially, the motivation behind our kitchen pantry DIY project was twofold. First, we were fed up with the lack of organization, mess, and wasted space in our existing pantry and we were ready for a change as of yesterday.

Second, we didn’t want to pay those cabinet prices, wait on the supply chain, or continue to shop around (the fatigue is real).

We knew there had to be a more cost-effective and faster way to achieve our goals. So why not just do it ourselves?

We knew that finishing out our own pantry would not only save us a fortune but get it done way quicker.

To ease the pressure, we went into the mindset of trying to make it look the best we could but knowing that if it was absolutely terrible, we could go back to the original pantry plan when we felt like investing that money. (Spoiler alert: We love it and have no plans to change it right now!)

So, ready to make a change, we got to work!

Cabinets

Custom cabinets are without a doubt the most expensive part of any kitchen or pantry. Because our overall space is on the narrow side and we wanted an upgrade from wire shelves, custom cabinets were our only good option, and though I was pleased with the plan and rendering, they were going to cost a lot of money.

There are times that quality cabinetry is worth it (we splurged in our kitchen), but there are also times when you have to balance out the cost, choosing a higher-quality pick in one area, and a more budget-friendly pick in another.

We looked around at places like Menards, Lowes, and Home Depot for more affordable kitchen cabinets. Because stock base cabinets are too deep for our space, we planned on getting base cabinets and cutting them down.

It sounded like a lot of work and we weren’t thrilled with the idea, but then we found stock wall cabinets that were the perfect depth!

diy pantry kitchen cabinets

We built a base to make them tall enough and then concealed that with a toe kick. This did not take a long time at all and it was a great way to get cabinets at a fraction of the price. Our cabinets cost about $1,000.

We found them at Lowes and I’ll admit, the cabinet doors are not the highest quality and they don’t look all that expensive. I thought about scrapping the whole idea, but thought if the room got completed, you might not be able to tell that the cabinets looked a little cheap.

Plus, you really can’t argue with the price and how in a matter of hours, we already had cabinets that I could use to finally start organizing.

It’s true what they say: You can have fast, cheap, or good – pick two. In this case, we opted for fast and cheap and were hoping to bring all the “good” in through the finishing touches.

Countertop

After getting our full overlay shaker-style cabinets in place, it was time to get a countertop.

When I was browsing Lowes looking for cabinets, I came across this beautiful chevron-style butcher block. Now, I’m more of a herringbone gal, but it was unique and beautiful (and in stock!) and I knew I wanted to use it.

chevron butcherblock countertop pantry

Our butcher block countertops cost around $800. We had to cut them down to fit our narrower depth, but we did have some left over and we used it for a shelf – which you’ll see soon. This saved us even more on materials and gave the space a cohesive look.

Backsplash

Though I never planned on doing a tile backsplash in here, we had lots of leftover materials at this point in our build and thought, why not use it? It’s just sitting in the garage anyway!

It wasn’t our first time doing tile, but it was my first time using the Zellige-inspired tile, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I love how forgiving an irregular tile is. You don’t have to get it perfect, so I found that it was very DIY-friendly.

zellige inspired ceramic pantry backsplash tile

Because the tile was leftover from the kitchen and we purchased it over a year ago, I consider this part of the project free!

We didn’t have enough tile for the opposite wall, but had some, so we got to thinking how we could use it. Using the leftover black and white marble tile from Stone Center that we used in our entryway, we created our own custom pattern.

The Kitchen Pantry Reveal

“Only Paolo can take this and this…

pantry before makeover

…and give you…a princess!”

european kitchen pantry diy

(Name that movie)

There are so many good details in here I don’t know where to start!

Let’s start on the right side of the room.

As you can see, my inspiration for this space was a Parisian bistro. Not only am I infatuated with this aesthetic, but it also coordinates with the rest of my European-inspired home.

european butler pantry

I love the Parisian aesthetic so much that I tried to find French antiques to fill the space. The brass and silver sign was actually found in a French cafe (via Etsy). I had it shipped from France and it just makes the space. It translates to, “Thank you for depositing your tray.”

The white cabinets ended up looking a lot more expensive with the brass hardware and other design elements. The gold outlets upgrade the whole space and coordinate with the rest of the finishes.

The beautiful brass shelving brackets were a flea market find for $15! They hold up the leftover countertop that we made into a shelf.

From my silver platter to my picture frames, the rest of the little decor details are thrifted, things I previously had, or found from places like T.J.Maxx or Hobby Lobby.

Behind the cabinet doors, you’ll find pantry items like paper towels, vitamins, medicine, extra household products, special occasion dishes, and napkins.

Because we (thankfully) have a lot of storage space in our kitchen, we didn’t need this pantry for food items. This is the designated storage room for our main level, so what works best for us is to use it for household items.

Now, onto the other side of the pantry!

european butler pantry

We love our beverages, can’t you tell?

Being avid coffee, tea, and espresso drinkers, it only made sense to turn this into a coffee bar – and I couldn’t be more pleased.

The sink rough-in was already done by plumbers, so we just brought it to life with this handmade brass sink and this brass faucet.

The copper kettle, spinning tea carousel, cord-free lamp, sugar packet holder, gold spoons, Nespresso pod holder, Nespresso machine, and white and copper coffee maker all have a practical purpose while still being aesthetically pleasing.

I already had these glass and gold upper shelves and they were the perfect solution for my coffee area. The best part is that they filled the wall space, making it look like I planned for them all along!

When really, I purchased them a few years ago, kept them in storage, and had a completely different thought on how I’d use them. Don’t you love it when a plan comes together?

On the top shelf, I keep items that I don’t use as frequently, and within easy reach, you’ll find my tea cups and coffee mugs.

Putting the DIY In Kitchen Pantry DIY

So, how did we save over $15,000? Well, the obvious answers are the cabinets and labor. Instead of spending $13,000 on the cabinets and then money on installation, we spent $1,000 on cabinets and did it ourselves.

Tile installation would have been $700-1k+ (based on previous bids), not to mention the cost of purchasing new tile. And since we used what we already had, our tile cost was $0. (I know it still cost money at one point, but let me have this one!)

Stone countertops would have been around $2-3k, but our butcher block pick was around $800 instead.

Though I didn’t add it all up to the dollar, I know we saved at least $15,000!

You can’t deny the value of professionals and there is definitely a time and place to hire out, but our DIY pantry was done in just a little over a weekend, and with a little creativity and resourcefulness, we were able to take our blank space and turn it into a custom pantry.

Though the previous plan with the custom cabinets would have been pretty and useful, I’m happy with our end result because it has a lot more personality.

Straying from the original plan can be a good thing, and I’m glad we decided to take this one. Whether you have a large space or a small pantry, I bet you can take on a DIY project and customize your own pantry too!

Welcome to my cozy European-inspired living room! I am pleased to share with you all the design and decor details of this space. As a lover of all things French Country, I wanted to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of a charming European home. From the plaster fireplace to the vintage dresser and gold accents, every element in this room was chosen to evoke a sense of rustic elegance. So come on in, grab a cup of tea, and let me show you around my cozy European living room!

The Heart of the Room: A Look at the Plaster Tapered Gas Fireplace

cozy European living room

When you step into the room, the first thing that catches your eye is the tapered gas fireplace. A fireplace makes an amazing focal point and if you have one (though no problems if you don’t), you’ll find that it’s the heart of the room, exuding warmth and charm.

We wanted a tapered fireplace that extends to the vaulted ceiling, not only to highlight the height of the room but to highlight a European style as well.

We finished the fireplace ourselves (for under $200) in plaster to give it an old-world appeal. The smooth plaster finish adds a touch of minimalism, while the tapered design creates a focal point that draws your gaze upward.

Since we choose not to have a TV on our main level, I filled in the space with an ornate gold mirror. It adds the perfect amount of glam!

Creating an Inviting Atmosphere: The Comfortable Seating Arrangement

two couches facing each other living room

This room has already been through a few different layouts and I can’t say it won’t change again (that’s part of the fun!), but right now, I’m pleased with the seating arrangement.

After all, when it comes to creating an inviting and cozy atmosphere, the seating arrangement plays a crucial role. I wanted to ensure that everyone who enters this space feels welcomed and at ease. That’s why I opted for two plush couches facing each other, creating a cozy area for conversation and relaxation.

The couches themselves are not only comfortable, but they also add to the overall aesthetic of the room. The green couch, upholstered in a soft, luxurious fabric, adds elegance and sophistication.

The off-white linen couch, adds to the neutral color palette of the room and seamlessly blends with the rest of the room’s design elements, while still providing a cozy and inviting feel.

To add an extra layer of comfort, throw pillows and soft blankets are always a good idea. These cozy accessories, like my green knit throw blanket and toile pillow covers, not only enhance the overall comfort of the seating arrangement but also add pops of color and texture to the space.

Nestled between the two couches is an amazing second-hand find, my metal and glass coffee table. The size, detailing, color, and dramatic legs are perfect for this space – and for $20 no less!

Underneath the coffee table, you’ll find layered rugs. The large jute rug serves as the foundation, adding a natural and textural element to the space. On top of the jute rug, I placed a sage green and white rug.

The sage green adds a pop of color and ties into the rest of the color palette. The white accents in the rug brighten up the space and create a fresh and airy feel.

In fashion and in the home, layering is a great way to add extra style and interest! I love the natural look of a jute rug, but adding another rug on top provides an extra layer of coziness and comfort underfoot.

Creating a Beautiful Display: The Gallery Wall

vintage pictures gallery wall with vintage and antique brass frames

This gallery wall feels like a mini art exhibit, and it’s one of my favorite decor elements in the living room!

What perhaps feels the most special to me is that this gallery wall has been created with second-hand and vintage frames, and inside each curated frame are beautiful photos that complement the overall aesthetic of the room and provide a cozy display.

A battery-operated picture light is the perfect topping for this arrangement.

Underneath the frames stands one of my favorite furniture pieces (Can I keep saying everything is my favorite?) – a second-hand vintage dresser I found years ago for $25, give or take. This piece has made an appearance in all my homes; it’s been used as a kitchen island, an entryway drop zone, and now nestled next to a fireplace.

Balancing Rustic with Elegant: The Custom Iron Railing

iron railing european living room

Since our stair railing is open to the rest of the room, I knew it needed to match the aesthetic. I sent an inspiration photo to the welders and they perfectly balanced the rustic charm (hammered metal) with an elegant touch (detailed balusters and lamb tongue).

The combination of solid iron and intricate designs adds a sense of sturdiness and strength to the space, while the elegant scrolls and decorative elements bring a touch of elegance and beauty.

What I love most about the custom iron railing is how it complements the other design elements in the room. Its dark metal finish provides a nice contrast to the light colors and textures throughout the space, creating a visually appealing balance while also tying into the black fireplace and black coffee table.

It also serves as a subtle backdrop for the other focal points in the room, allowing them to truly shine.

Another favorite (there’s what word again) focal point and all-time favorite house purchase is this French medieval tapestry!

I needed something to fill this wall and I thought one large item would be more impactful than another gallery wall. I had my heart set on a tapestry, but they can be very pricey. It took months, but I kept my eye on them and then found one go on sale on Etsy!

The scene is perfect and the colors tie into the rest of the home’s color scheme so nicely. We used a gold curtain rod to hang it up and it’s absolutely perfect!

An Intimate Spot: The Charming Nook

living room nook with benches and marble table

Situated behind our seating arrangement, you’ll find a charming nook. This space started off as a mistake (it was supposed to be much bigger), so it’s seen multiple versions to find something that’s just right, and I know it will continue to change.

In the spring, the middle window is going to be replaced with a picture window so we can eliminate the middle bars in order to take full advantage of the views, and also provide peace of mind that no kids are going to open it up and fall down the hill. We are also considering adding a deck off the back of the house, but the complexities of our sloped lot demand more planning and budgeting.

But as of now, this intimate space is created with two custom benches facing each other, creating the perfect spot for conversation, eating, and working. At the center of it all is a marble table, begging for cups of tea and heartfelt conversations!

Flanking the marble table are sconces, casting a warm and inviting glow on the nook. These sconces not only provide functional lighting, but also add a touch of elegance and ambiance to the space.

Though perhaps not how I originally envisioned it, this nook in my cozy European living room feels like a gem, offering a peaceful and intimate retreat within the larger space. We’ve used it for morning coffee, reading a book, sharing laughter with friends, and coloring.

Final Touches: Details to Achieving a French Country Living Room

When it comes to achieving a French Country or European living room, the design is truly in the details. It’s those final touches that make all the difference and give the space its unique charm.

From vintage brass candle holders to coffee table books, these small touches add a sense of charm to the space.

Another important detail in a living room is the thoughtful placement of plants and flowers. Greenery adds life and vitality to the space, bringing in a natural element that complements the rustic elegance of the room. I opted for a faux olive tree and faux lavender stems to bring the feeling of the European countryside to Iowa.

Lastly, the lighting in any living room plays an important role in creating the perfect ambiance. I’ve chosen a combination of warm, soft lighting fixtures, such as sconces to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The wagon wheel chandelier adds a rustic statement to the room and matches the woodsy surroundings.

Though I’m sure this room will see many different versions in the coming years, waking up to this cozy living room with European touches is a bright spot of my day!

I’m someone who spends a lot of time in the bathroom (hot baths are my love language!), so for me, the primary bathroom was a priority. We wanted to create a luxurious spa-like oasis and I’m in love with the end result. From the marble-inspired tile to the classy touches of brass, everything came together so nicely. Whether you’re looking for ideas, inspiration, or an escape, I’m excited to share the reveal of our classy primary bathroom with you!

Design Inspiration for Our Primary Bathroom

Providence House Design designed the layout for this room and I picked out the finishes. From the get-go, I knew I wanted this space to be airy and calming with a touch of glam. With that vision in mind, style decisions came easily! We wanted our bathroom to be a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation, and including design elements like brass and marble helped us achieve that goal.

7 months ago I shared the mood board of what I envisioned this room looking like. Let’s take a look at that and see if the outcome stayed true to that original plan or not.

Primary Bath Mood Board

The Reveal

classy primary bathroom with marble and brass

Here she is!

Pretty close, right?

Though the specific products may not have stayed the same, the essence of the room did.

Let’s start with the vanity wall.

You can see in the mood board that I was planning on these wood vanities, but by the time it came to officially order, they were out of stock. Rather than risk holding up the project, I ordered the white version instead.

Though it wasn’t what I planned on, it worked out great! The room already has plenty of contrast with the ceramic marble tile, and the white vanities balance out the trim color and tile, in my opinion.

I love the way the polished brass faucet looks with the marble top. I didn’t plan to mix metals with the chrome vanity pulls, I just forgot to switch them out!

We have “his and hers” vanities instead of a double vanity and I like this decision. It’s nice that we each get our own space and we can get ready or unready together, without having to bump shoulders.

Does my husband mind the aesthetic? Real answer: Nope! He says that he sees it as classy more than girly (which gave me the title of the post), and he says if I like it, then he’s happy. Aw, what a keeper. (Though to be fair, I did stage his side a little more feminine than what it actually is on the day-to-day.)

The classy feel gets pulled together with the gold mirror, glass shelf, marble bowl, gold tray, glass soap dispenser, and brass towel hook.

Now onto the other side of the room!

As I said earlier, I am a big bath girl. We’re talking almost every night. Candles, bubble bath…the whole shebang. So of course, a soaker tub was a dream of mine.

freestanding soaker tub

On the mood board, you can see I planned for sconces on each side of the bathtub and a hanging chandelier. Turns out, there was not enough room for sconces and the room is not big enough to warrant two ceiling light fixtures, so I chose one centered one instead.

But I’ve got a ledge for candles, a view of nature, a caddy for my bath salts, and a cute table to hold my tea. What more could a girl ask for?

Last but not least, the shower!

marble walk in shower

You may be wondering where the shower door is. Well, our builder never put a door on, but then we realized that we don’t actually need it. The actual showerhead is far back enough that the water is (mostly) contained to the tile.

We’ll go through a winter and see how it feels showering without a glass door, but right now, adding a door is not a priority since it’s not a need. There are still other parts of this house not finished, so we’ll focus on those first.

Though I envisioned the shower head being on the other wall that you face when you walk into the shower, it couldn’t go there because it’s an exterior wall. At first, I thought it was a little funny having it where it was, but it created an “entrance” for the shower. That area is big and dry enough to hold our towels on these gold hooks and it’s so nice not having to walk far to get a towel. (First world problems.)

shower entrance primary bathroom

A shower niche is a great idea and nice to have, but if I’m being honest, we probably need 2-3 niches to actually fit all of our combined products! Of course, this one below is styled and not a reality of our day-to-day life.

But that’s why I really love this shower bench. It’s so versatile. It’s an overflow for products but also serves as a shaving stool for me.

shower bench in walk in shower

We’ve got our toilet tucked away behind a door and though I have many favorites about this room, that’s probably a top one.

Overall, I love the feeling of our classy primary bathroom and most importantly, the function it provides! I hope it provided you with inspiration as you tackle a renovation, a refresh, or a build.

Welcome to our library sunroom! After months and months of planning, waiting, and working, I am excited to finally start sharing the finished spaces of our home. The slightly ironic thing is that our library sunroom, our first finished room, doesn’t actually look like this anymore.

The goal for this space was to be a cozy, multipurpose room, and I guess it’s living up to its (multi)purpose. Since moving in 2 months ago, we are still figuring out how the space best works for us. Even when you build a house you think you know how it’s all going to flow because you think about the house for months and even years, and maybe the process worked better for other people, but for us, there were definitely a few surprises of, “Oh wait, I don’t think I like that…”

But this is not a post about regrets or mistakes – it’s a celebration post! Because even though there are still many unfinished things in this house, we have a room that feels finished.

So as of now, this library sunroom is actually a library/sunroom/dining room. I think that could be another reveal to show how we’ve squeezed out different purposes in one room, but for today, I’ll go through with the original reveal and show you how we used this space as the coziest reading room.

Come on in!

library sunroom reveal
cozy library sunroom

We have an open floor plan, so our goal was to create a cozy, private space on the main level where you could go when you needed to shut the doors (and sometimes shut the people out).

I’ve always dreamt of having a room with lots of windows where you could go and curl up with a good book in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. I like to think we achieved this by combining the best elements of a classic library with the warmth of a sunroom.

So of course, lots of windows were a must. Providence House Design squeezed about as many as they could on the 2 exterior walls. I added the simple grid to add a little more character.

I am beyond thankful for our views. Building on the side of a hill was an interesting and expensive process and not one I’m sure I want to do again, BUT the location and views were why we bought this land, and fortunately, they don’t disappoint. It’s especially breathtaking now in the fall, and when the light hits just right, it looks like a painting.

library sunroom

Though admittedly these French doors don’t provide much of a sound barrier, it was important for me to maximize the light as much as possible. As you can see, this room gets gorgeous morning light and it’s perfect for sipping my morning cup of coffee.

Now, for the library part of the room.

sage green bookcases in a library

These bookcases are one of my favorite second-hand finds ever. We debated doing custom shelving in here, but we didn’t really want to spend the money, plus, we weren’t 100% sure how we wanted to use the space, and built-in bookcases really commit you to a certain layout, both financially and spatially.

I found this set of then white and chippy bookcases at a furniture thrift store and painted them Sage Green by Sherwin Williams, which ties in very nicely with the sage green rug. I’m thrilled with their addition to the room! They add character and the book storage we need, and I’ll admit, I love saving money. But who doesn’t?!

Sometimes the money-saving choice makes you feel like you’re sacrificing on design. And sure, a professional interior designer may say that filling the whole wall and bringing them to the ceiling would make them look more built-in and therefore the room would be taller, better, more expensive, etc…but I’m not a professional designer and this isn’t an interior design blog, so I don’t have to follow the design rules. 🙂 (But I hope I give you lots of inspo!)

Because the bookcases draw your eye to this wall, I switched out the white wall vent for this ornate aluminum floor vent and spray painted it gold/brass so it would flow better with the other gold accents in the room, like the chandelier.

These bookcases, though styled, are filled with books we actually read. I made sure to include meaningful reminders too – my mom painted the landscape picture under the battery-operated picture light!

Other things I love are the French books I found at an antique store in Iowa (of all places), the brass horse I found at a flea market in Rhode Island, and various pictures from my travels in Europe.

This couch is massive, about the width of a twin-size bed, but it’s probably my favorite furniture piece we own. It’s so deep and comfortable – the most perfect thing for cuddling and reading. What’s even better is that I’ve managed to keep it clean(ish) despite having two boys because it’s slipcovered – meaning you can strip it down and completely wash everything. We’ve had to do that numerous times, but in my opinion, so worth it.

The brown accent chairs, paired with the round coffee table, serve as conversational seating and the brass drink stand can perfectly hold two mugs.

We wanted a space that was not only cozy, but also filled with natural light and surrounded by the beauty of nature. We wanted our reading nook to be a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a place where we could relax and unwind. Whether we’re enjoying a hot beverage or diving into a new novel, this space brings us joy and a sense of togetherness.

But after living with it for several weeks, we realized that the space had the potential to serve multiple purposes. We wanted to create a space that not only encouraged reading and relaxation but also allowed for social gatherings and formal family meals.

So we decided to combine the best elements of our library (bookcase, cozy seating) with the function of a dining room, creating a versatile space that could accommodate both our love for books and our love for togetherness. The result is a library/sunroom/dining room combo that is functional and inviting. It may not look like a traditional sunroom, but it suits our needs…for now!

Another thing I wanted to do with each reveal was to show a non-staged version. Because as I’m sure you guessed, no, I don’t usually have a giant branch in the middle of our room!

So, when it’s not messy, here’s what the room looks like for the majority of the time.

Simple, but still good.

Stay tuned for the dining room sunroom combo reveal while we put on the finishing touches! In the meantime, you can read Our Living Room: Progress Pictures & Plaster Fireplace

Fall is a great time to refresh your wardrobe with cozy sweaters, swap out your hand soaps for ones that smell so good you could eat them (but really shouldn’t), and decorate your porch in autumn style. But as you’ve come to find out, decorating can be expensive! I’m thankful that we recently moved into our (almost completed) home build, but let me tell you, when you just get done spending a lot of money on a house, whether that be through a build, a renovation, or buying, the last thing you want to do is go drop a bunch more money on decorations.

But don’t worry – you don’t have to let the fall season pass you by with a bare house. To help you out (and myself), I put together some fall front porch decorating ideas on a budget. These ideas, tips, and simple tricks will help you create an inviting, cozy atmosphere that won’t break the bank. With a few simple and affordable touches, you can easily turn your front porch into the perfect spot to enjoy the beauty of the season!

1. Assess Your Space to Know What You Need

When it comes to decorating your front porch for the fall season, it’s important to first assess your space so you know what you need. Whatever budget you have, you want it to go far! Take a good look at your front porch and think about how you want it to look and feel.

Consider the size of your outdoor space, whether it’s a small front porch or a larger area, and determine what will work best for your wants. Do you want it to be simple, minimalistic, and chic? Or do you want to embrace the maximalist style and fill every concrete surface with orange pumpkins?

2. Set a Budget

Decorating can quickly become expensive if you’re not careful. And I don’t know about you, but the thrill of my favorite season has me feeling a little loose with my wallet at times. To combat reckless spending, setting a budget is important.

And the first step in setting a budget is determining what you actually need for your front porch. Make a list of the essential items that will help you achieve your desired look. Maybe you need some hay bales to create a rustic feel, or perhaps you want to invest in a cozy outdoor seating area.

Whatever it may be, prioritize your favorite things. It’s also helpful to prioritize the most expensive items, such as a porch swing or rocking chair, to ensure you get those, and then you can get cute “filler” pieces with whatever money you have left.

3. Visit the Thrift Store

Once you have your list, it’s time to think about cost-effective ways to obtain these items, if needed. Thrift stores and online marketplaces are great places to find unique and affordable pieces.

And if you’re willing to start early and do a little digging, you’ll be surprised at the treasures you can find for a fraction of the price! When you start your thrifting adventure, be on the lookout for things like throw pillows that could use a new inexpensive cover or mini pumpkins that you could group together to create a beautiful collection.

4. Choose a Color Palette and Theme

I talk about the amazing transformation a color palette can do for your wardrobe all the time, and if choosing the right colors can convey a certain message for the clothes you wear, why shouldn’t it work for your home decor as well? Plus, who doesn’t love a good theme? It just ties it all together!

To make your budget look like a million bucks, start by choosing a color scheme that speaks to you and reflects the fall season. A classic fall color scheme like orange, yellow, and brown is always a safe bet, but don’t be afraid to do whatever it is that you like.

You could go for a more muted and earthy color palette with shades of green, brown, and rust. Or maybe you want to go for a more modern look with black and white accents. This year, I chose a soft and warm color palette of red, sage green, and brown. Whatever you choose, try to stick to up to 3 colors, and make sure the colors you use complement each other and create a cohesive feel.

Once you have your color scheme in mind, think about how you can incorporate different textures to add depth and visual interest. For example, you could layer different materials like burlap, plaid, and faux fur to create a cozy and rustic look. For a sophisticated yet natural touch, choose jute. Mixing textures not only adds visual appeal but also creates a tactile experience that can make your front porch feel more inviting.

Another simple way to create a cohesive look is by using repetition. Choose a few key elements, like lanterns or pumpkins, and use them in different areas of your front porch. This repetition creates a sense of unity and ties the whole space together.

5. Focus on a Specific Area

Not enough in the budget to add a fall touch to every surface? No worries. Instead of trying to decorate everything, pick 1-2 areas that you really want to focus on. This is a great way to save on costs.

Maybe you want to create a cozy seating area near your front door for a warm welcome, or perhaps you want to showcase a collection of pumpkins on your steps. Understanding how you want to use your space and how you want it to look will help you prioritize your decor and ensure that you’re making the most of your front porch.

6. Repurpose What You Have

One of the best ways to decorate on a budget is not to buy anything new and to use what you have. Take a look in storage and walk around your house to see what can be repurposed for your front porch decor to create a cozy fall atmosphere.

For example, if you have a wicker basket lying around, fill it with pinecones, acorns, or small gourds to add a natural element to your outdoor space. You can also repurpose an old ladder by leaning it against the wall and placing potted plants or small pumpkins on each rung.

If you have any old lanterns or vases, fill them with fall leaves, twigs, or even fairy lights for a warm and inviting touch. That old wooden crate in your garage? It could be the perfect display for your collection of white pumpkins. This time of year is all about embracing rustic and natural, so anything goes.

7. Buy Now to Save Later

Okay, on the flip side, there are some purchases you could make now that will save you money in the long run. While repurposing items you already have is a budget-friendly option, sometimes you may want to invest in a few key pieces that will last for years to come. These items can be reused season after season, making them a cost-effective choice in the long term.

One example of fall decor that has an upfront cost but saves money long-term is a set of durable outdoor lanterns. Lanterns can create a warm and cozy ambiance on your front porch, and they can be used not only during the fall season but also during other occasions throughout the year. Consider investing in lanterns made of weather-resistant materials like high-quality metal or plastic. This way, they will withstand the elements and remain in good condition for years to come.

Another option to consider is a set of faux pumpkins. While real pumpkins are a staple of fall decor, they only last for a short period of time before they start to decay. Investing in quality faux pumpkins allows you to reuse them year after year without worrying about them rotting or losing their shape.

You can find faux pumpkins in various colors, shapes, and sizes online or at your local craft store, including classic orange pumpkins or trendy white pumpkins. They are an easy DIY project too, as you can paint or customize them to match your front porch ideas.

8. Forage the Woods

Natural elements really do make for the best fall front porch decor! Don’t forget to take advantage of nature’s free decor and fall foliage, because foraging the woods is a great way to add natural elements to your porch decor without spending a dime. Take a stroll through a nearby wooded area and keep an eye out for tall grasses, branches, acorns, leaves, and pinecones that have fallen to the ground.

Branches can be used to create rustic and charming arrangements. Bundle them together and tie them with twine to make a beautiful natural wreath. You can also place them in a tall vase or bucket for a striking centerpiece.

Leaves are another fantastic free resource. Gather a variety of colorful leaves and use them to fill empty lanterns or vases. You can also scatter them across your front porch steps or use them to create a leafy border around potted plants.

Pinecones can add a touch of whimsy and texture to your fall porch. Display them in a decorative bowl or use them to create a unique garland by stringing them together with twine. You can also paint them in fall colors.

9. Get Crafty

One of the best ways to add personal touches to your fall front porch decor is by incorporating DIY projects. Not only are they a budget-friendly option, but they also allow you to showcase your creativity and add unique elements to your space, giving your fall decorating a personal feel. It doesn’t matter your skill level, there’s an easy diy project for everyone.

One of the best ways to instantly add charm to your front porch is with a fall-themed wreath. You can create a wreath using materials such as faux leaves, pinecones, and berries. Simply attach these items to a grapevine or foam wreath base using hot glue or floral wire. Hang it on your front door or display it on a wall or window for a festive touch.

Another fun DIY project is creating your own outdoor sign. You can paint a wooden plank with fall-themed phrases or quotes using stencils or freehand. You can also repurpose an old chalkboard or a vintage window frame and write a seasonal greeting or message on it using chalk or paint pens.

If you’re feeling crafty, you can also make your own fall-themed centerpiece. Fill a glass jar or a lantern with pinecones, acorns, and cinnamon sticks. You can also add some orange pumpkins or gourds for a pop of color. Place it on your porch table or near your seating area for a cozy and inviting feel.

10. Don’t Forget About the Dollar Store

Now, let’s talk about one of my favorite places to find budget-friendly fall decor: Dollar Tree! Don’t underestimate the treasures you can find at your local dollar store when it comes to decorating your front porch for the fall season. These places can be a goldmine for affordable decor that you can use to fill in the gaps.

From faux pumpkins and leaves to moss and twinkly lights, you can find everything you need to create a festive front porch without breaking the bank.

Not only does the dollar store offer affordable options, but they also often have a good selection of craft supplies. This means you can get creative and personalize your fall decor even more. Grab some paint, ribbon, or glitter and transform plain items into unique and eye-catching pieces.

11. Check Out Your Grocery Store

A garden center or nursery can be pricey at times if you’re looking to get some fall flowers. Have you thought about checking out your grocery store? Places like Aldi offer affordable flower arrangements and beautiful white mums that will go a long way toward sprucing up your fall decorations.

12. Add Final Touches

Now that you’ve assessed your space, set a budget, and added personal touches to your fall front porch decor, it’s time to add the final touches that will really make your space shine.

If you don’t already have them, plants are a great way to bring life and color to your front porch. Consider adding potted mums, which come in a variety of vibrant fall colors, such as deep reds, oranges, and yellows. These flowers are hardy and can withstand cooler temperatures, making them the perfect addition to your fall porch. You can place them in decorative pots and arrange them near your front door or along your steps.

In addition to mums, you can also add some greenery and texture with ornamental grasses. These tall and wispy plants add height and movement to your front porch. You can find ornamental grasses in various shades of green and brown, which will complement your fall color scheme. Place them in pots or planters and position them strategically around your front porch for added visual interest.

In addition to plants and classic decor items like pumpkins, consider adding other elements like lanterns, wreaths, and cozy blankets. Lanterns with candles or fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Hang a fall-themed wreath on your front door or display it on a wall or window. And don’t forget to have some cozy blankets nearby for chilly autumn evenings!

Fall front porch decorating ideas on a budget don’t mean sacrificing style. It just means getting a little creative and prioritizing what you really need. Now that you’ve got these front porch ideas, grab a pumpkin spice latte, put on an autumn jazz playlist to set the mood, and start transforming your front porch into a cozy haven!

Nope, this is not a reveal, but an exciting post nonetheless. We are making progress on our home! Several weeks ago, we moved into our (slightly unfinished) home build, and have been putting on the finishing touches ever since. I shared a post right when we moved in of almost everything that still needed to be completed, but let’s park it in the living room today.

When we moved in, we set up our furniture right away. It didn’t take that long, mostly because I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to use and where. And the space isn’t huge, so it’s not like there were endless combinations to try.

Do you see the biggest thing that feels unfinished about the room? Yep, it’s staring right at you. The fireplace!

We had gotten a quote for stucco (5k) but were hesitant to make it official. Mostly because the fireplace finishing didn’t *need* to be done; it’s just aesthetics. And since we are currently (there are electricians in our basement as I write this!) finishing our basement, a lot of our house budget is tied up there.

But also, there’s always a small part of us that thinks this: What if we just did it ourselves?

We lived it with the fireplace unfinished for a few weeks, and it’s certainly not the end of the world, but we talked about how much better the space would feel if it were finished. So we circled back around to the conversation of the fireplace, debating if we should do this project ourselves or not, tossing around thoughts such as:

This is the main focal point of our living room – what if we mess it up and regret it?

It’d be really nice to not have to wait to get on someone’s schedule. We’d be able to get it done sooner.

$5,000 to finish the fireplace is worth it.

$5,000 to finish the fireplace is a lot of money.

It’d be great if we didn’t have to have a crew of workers in our living room for days. That wouldn’t be very fun to live around.

Back and forth. Back and forth we went. Ultimately, we decided to do it ourselves!

If you’ve done any type of extensive renovation or have built a home, I’m sure you can relate and agree that at one point, you get so tired of spending money. Though budget played a part, ultimately, what confirmed the decision was that we decided the risk was worth the reward.

It would cost us about $200 in materials and a long weekend of our time, and if we really hated it, we could take it down and hire someone to do it next year. But at least we’d have something nicer to look at in the meantime, and I really didn’t want a crew on our main level with us if we could help it. I’m very grateful anytime we can have someone professional do work for us, but having a crew take over our upstairs, as well as the basement, is a little much for us.

The other reason that we thought we could take it on was that I didn’t even want stucco. I wanted a plaster look with texture. Something that didn’t look too new or perfect. I wanted it to subtly add texture and interest to the space, while still being a neutral backdrop, which is why we didn’t opt for stone. Stone is so, so lovely, but leans more rustic, and I wasn’t looking to make that type of statement.

After researching our desired outcome and fireplace safety requirements, we came up with a loose game plan. By the way, this is not a tutorial, we are just simply sharing our experience!

First, we covered the framing in cement board and drywall. The cement board went around the gas insert for fire safety, and the drywall went everywhere else. This part wasn’t too bad, actually. Not pictured below, but we also added corner beads, and it made the project look nice and sharp.

diy plaster fireplace before and after

Next is where things got a little fuzzy – on my end. I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to finish it. I knew I wanted a textured plastered look, but I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to achieve that.

First, I experimented with creating a texture out of joint compound. We covered the entire fireplace in joint compound (except we used mortar on the cement board) and let it dry overnight.

diy plaster fireplace

The next day, we could see that it added texture, but it didn’t add color depth. So we decided to go with actual plaster. Now, I had read a blog post warning people not to use Plaster of Paris, and well, they were right – ha! That’s what we used and we made it through, but it was pretty difficult to use and definitely made the project harder.

plaster of paris tapered fireplace

We applied Plaster of Paris to the entire fireplace, purposefully trying to add texture with a “swooshing” motion.

diy plaster of paris tapered fireplace

We added some. Took it away. Sanded. Added more. It was a process to get a “perfectly imperfect” look. Also, we worked the majority of the time with the can lights on as the can lights provided the harshest look to the fireplace. In the natural light, it’s so pretty and soft, and we figured, hey, if it looks good with all the can lights shining on it then it’s a success!

diy plaster tapered fireplace

We waited for the last coat of plaster to dry, but were feeling overall optimistic about it! Once it dried, I got my paint supplies ready and did a small test patch, only to realize that painting was a bad idea. It took away the color depth I wanted and made the finish look flat.

So we left it the natural color of the plaster, cleaned it up, and caulked the edges.

diy plaster tapered fireplace

If you’re wondering where the mantel is, I decided on no mantel for now. I wasn’t sure if the line of the mantel would compete with the natural taper line of the fireplace. Also, I like the simpler look, and I have my dresser right next to it which I get to decorate. We can always add a mantel later, but I did want my big gold mirror to take center stage!

diy paris of plaster tapered fireplace great room

And that’s where we are now!

We were nervous and hesitant to do this ourselves, but we are really, really pleased with the outcome. The biggest thing is that the living room now feels almost complete and you don’t have a big hole in the wall staring at you. We saved over $4,800, got it completed in about 3 days, I got to control the finish, and we didn’t have to live around a crew.

We wouldn’t have attempted this project if we were building it from scratch. I think it turned out well because the framing was already done, not to mention the electricity, HVAC, and gas line. If it were up to us to get the framing perfect, I don’t think it would have gone very well, but overall, I am glad that we decided to take this project on! Hopefully, it doesn’t give us false confidence for future house projects that may arise. 😉

We still have finishing touches for this room and we’re waiting on the gas insert panels, but bit by bit we are finishing this space and this house. These pictures were just taken on my phone, but a full reveal and sources will come later!
